Introducing TerraceCafe Maitri
Hello travelers!
This is Aikero, your SaruKuma writer who once again failed to start hay fever treatment this year.
Today I’m excited to introduce a wonderful spot located in Mashiki Town, Kamimashiki District
【TerraceCafe Maitri】.
This is a brand-new sister shop to the reservation-only Farm Café Maitri, where you can casually grab takeout meals!
A gentle breeze, peaceful rice fields stretching to the horizon — it’s pure relaxation.
While the original Farm Café Maitri serves curry made with their home-grown rice, this location specializes in hearty, generously stacked burgers and freshly baked crepes.
There’s plenty of parking, making it easy for families with kids.
A heads-up though — the road right before the café is quite narrow and feels like a path only locals know, so it can be a bit nerve-wracking for first-time visitors. (laughs)
Google Maps will get you there reliably, but knowing this in advance can ease your mind.
By the way, the original Farm Café Maitri is just a little ways up the hill.
You might wonder — why open a takeout-only shop so close by?
The story is heartwarming: the landowner of the property where TerraceCafe Maitri now stands reached out and encouraged them to open this takeout-only branch.
The former landowner still keeps a vegetable garden on the property, often stops by for a drink, and even brings their grandchildren to visit.
It’s clearly a place beloved by the local community, and just hearing the story warmed my heart.
Now, let me show you the menu.
・Tandoori Chicken Burger — 800 yen
・Premium Hamburger — 900 yen
・Wagyu Beef Burger — 1,300 yen
・Sugar Butter Crepe — 400 yen
・Honey Lemon Cream Crepe — 500 yen
During my visit, there were also limited-edition seasonal crepes available! ♡
There’s also a wide variety of drinks on offer.
Not just coffee — they have an excellent tea selection too.
And surprisingly, even alcoholic drinks are available!
Although it’s primarily a takeout shop, you can enjoy your meal at the outdoor terrace seating.
Honestly, I’d recommend giving yourself plenty of time and dining on the terrace! (laughs)
The seasonal scenery of rice paddies and surrounding mountains is genuinely soothing — a different view to enjoy in every season.
If no staff are at the takeout window when you arrive, just press the button.
A staff member will come down from the upper café to assist you.
Restrooms are located at the upper café — please ask a staff member if you need to use them.

And here’s the burger I’d been eagerly waiting for!
I also ordered their homemade lemonade to go with it.
Can you tell how massive this thing is from the photo?
The bun is house-made milk bread.
The buns and crepe batter are made with locally sourced Kumamoto-grown flour and butter — true craftsmanship!
The tandoori chicken was thick, juicy, and perfectly spiced — combined with the cream cheese, it was an absolute knockout!
My daughter went for the winter-only Chocolate Banana Crepe.
The thin, chewy crepe batter was springy and soft, and my daughter exclaimed,
“This is the best crepe I’ve ever had!” with chocolate happily smeared around her mouth. ♪
I haven’t yet tried their crispy-style crepe — I really wanted to, but I was already stuffed. I’ll definitely be back to try it! ♡
With traditional Japanese candy stores becoming rarer these days, local children sometimes drop by here for a crepe as an after-school treat.
TerraceCafe Maitri is truly a place rooted in the community and beloved by neighbors — just being there feels calming and grounding.
Whether you visit solo or with family, come enjoy the cozy atmosphere, sink your teeth into a juicy burger or sweet crepe, and recharge your soul. ♪
