Welcome to Komeno Panya Genkido

Hello travelers! It’s Mido, a writer for Sarukuma.

Today we’re heading to Harumizu, Kikuyo Town, to visit
Komeno Panya Genkido β€” a beloved local bakery whose name translates roughly to “Rice Bread House of Vitality.”

Genkido first opened in Hikimizu, Ozu Town back in 2014, and just celebrated its 10th anniversary!
The shop relocated to its current spot in Harumizu, Kikuyo Town in January 2024 β€” so they’re also celebrating one year at the new location.
Congratulations all around!

Here you’ll find nutrient-rich breads made with locally grown Kumamoto brown rice (genmai). The eat-in space is generous and welcoming, making this a great pick for breakfast, lunch, or just a relaxed pit stop on a Kumamoto road trip.

Located right along the Kikuyo Bypass (National Route 57), the big sign makes it impossible to miss.
Meet “Gen-Mina-chan” β€” the adorable shop mascot! The parking lot is wide and easy to navigate.
And there’s not just one β€” they offer a second parking area too!The second lot is on the west side of the building. You can reach it from the main lot, or turn directly in from the Harumizu, Kikuyo intersection on the Kikuyo Bypass.
Here’s the second lot β€” plenty of space! Now let’s step inside! Rows of mouthwatering breads await. So many varieties β€” you can pick whatever matches your mood that day!
The savory “sozai pan” (filled breads) come out with a gorgeous golden crust.
The brown rice ratio of each bread is displayed right above its name.
The “Genmai Cheese Boule” and “Genmai Edamame Cheese” both contain 60% brown rice.
The “Mini Genmai Croissant” is just 90 yen each β€” a true bargain bite!
They also serve hot dogs and burgers!

There’s classic Japanese-style sliced bread (shokupan) too β€” made with 80% brown rice.
Plus rustic French-style options like campagne and bΓ’tard. Crunchy rusks make a perfect light snack when hunger hits. When I visited, a special strawberry fair was running β€” instant temptation! Homemade jams are also for sale (top left of photo).
There’s even a dedicated “Gluten-Free Corner”!
It offers breads, pasta, and ramen made without any of Japan’s 8 major food allergens β€” wheat, eggs, dairy, buckwheat, peanuts, shrimp, crab, and walnuts.
Gluten-free breads are sold frozen, perfect for stocking up at home!
They are flash-frozen right after baking, so just thaw at room temperature for about 2 hours and they’re ready to eat.
Keep some pizza dough in the freezer and you can bake fresh pizza at home anytime! The brown rice pasta, pasta sauces, and brown rice ramen are also gluten-free (so tempting!).
There are also gift sets β€” perfect for Japanese-style omiyage souvenirs!

All these gluten-free items can also be ordered through Komeno Panya Genkido’s online shop.
If you’re curious, definitely check it out (you can also see full ingredient lists there).
Drinks are sold in the shop too β€” the perfect companion for your bread.
They even have classic-style pudding made with eggs from local Kokko Farm! (so good!) The eat-in space has high ceilings and a roomy, airy feel β€” there’s also a hand-washing station. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows make it feel bright and open!

A coffee maker and a microwave are available for customers to use. There’s a multipurpose restroom with a diaper-changing table and a baby chair too!
It’s a wonderfully family-friendly bakery to drop into.

Recommended Menu Items at Komeno Panya Genkido

So many tempting choices! After a long debate, here’s what I picked up that day for a takeout lunch.

β—‹ Genmai Takana Pan (Brown Rice Mustard Greens Bread) β€” 200 yen, 80% brown rice
β—‹ Genmai Edamame Cheese β€” 220 yen, 60% brown rice
β—‹ Genmai Cornet with Chocolate Cream β€” 220 yen, 80% brown rice
β—‹ Mini Genmai Croissant β€” 90 yen, 60% brown rice
The “Genmai Edamame Cheese” is wonderfully chewy inside!
Edamame and bacon make a surprisingly addictive combination.
The “Genmai Takana Pan” is loaded with takana β€” Japanese pickled mustard greens β€” for a deeply savory, satisfying bite.
My daughter, who loves takana rice, was a huge fan!
The “Genmai Cornet with Chocolate Cream” looked just as delicious!
Stretchy chocolate cream β€” booiiing!
A fun way to eat it!

There was so much chocolate cream that we ended up dipping the croissant in it to make a DIY chocolate croissant β€” delicious creativity!
The “Mini Genmai Croissant” was crisp, flaky, and instantly became one of my favorites.
I couldn’t resist the “Strawberry & Cream Croissant” either β€” and I’m so glad I bought it. Absolutely delicious!

You might assume that bread made with 60–80% brown rice would feel dense or heavy β€” but not at all!
Every loaf was beautifully soft and full of flavor.
Delicious AND nutritious, thanks to all that nourishing genmai β€” the best of both worlds!
