About Okashiya Nikofuru

Hi there! It’s Kurubushi from the Sarukuma travel team ☆彡

Today I’m taking you to the Kyokushi area of Kikuchi City, home to a delightful little gem called

Okashiya Nikofuru (お菓子屋にこふる).

This brand-new cake shop just opened on March 27, 2025, so it’s still sparkling and fresh!

Tucked along an old-fashioned countryside street,

the pure-white storefront stands out beautifully against its rural surroundings.

My very first reaction when I arrived?

“How adorable!!”

The garden and shop look like they’ve been lifted straight out of a fairy tale.

My excitement was building with every step!

And then I stepped inside…

“How adorable!!!!” (yes, again — but with more exclamation marks)

The interior is decorated with beautifully coordinated antique furniture, creating an atmosphere so soothing you could happily linger just to soak it in.

At the heart of the shop, a glass display case sparkles with rows of impossibly cute, mouth-watering cakes.

Rich Cheese Roll Cake (whole) — 1,980 yen
Strawberry Shortcake — 530 yen
Rich Cheese Roll Cake (slice) — 480 yen

Classic Chocolate Cake — 450 yen
Japanese Chestnut Mont Blanc — 600 yen
Tiramisu — 600 yen
Cheese Soufflé — 430 yen
Opera Cake — 550 yen
Strawberry Tart — 650 yen
Niko Pudding — 300 yen

Honestly, every single one is just too cute!
I wanted to try them all (and I mean that with a completely straight face).

And really, who could blame me? They all look amazing — choosing just one feels impossible!

The customer ahead of me clearly felt the same way:

“I want this one, and that one… oh, and definitely that one too!” they said, walking out with a tower of boxes.

I get it. I really do. One cake is simply not enough.

Beyond cakes, the shop offers a wonderful selection of cookies, madeleines, and other baked treats —

perfect for souvenirs or small gifts to take home.

You’ll also find larger gift boxes that can be customized to your taste, beautifully presented in elegant packaging.

(My sweet-toothed little hand was already sneaking toward the cookies…)

One feature international visitors will appreciate: the shop has its own restroom — a rare and welcome amenity at a Japanese cake shop!

There’s also a generous parking lot in front of the shop with space for 5 cars.

The road in front is on the narrow side,

but the spacious lot makes it easy to pull in even if you’re not super confident behind the wheel of a Japanese rental car.

Travel tip: since the shop is so new, it may not appear on your map app yet. Try searching for the neighboring Takanaga Shrine (高永神社) instead — it’s right next door!

Ta-daa!! Here’s my haul:

Strawberry Shortcake, Fresh Chocolate Shortcake, and the Rich Cheese Roll Cake!

The shop’s signature item is the Rich Cheese Roll Cake — and I have to say, it’s my pick too!

Trust me on this — you absolutely have to try it at least once!!

The roll cake sponge is dense and packed with fluffy cheese, wrapped around a light cream filling.

You might think, “Well, if there’s cheese in the sponge, the cream must be plain, right?”

Wrong!

The cream is studded with diced cheese cubes!

The contrast between the light cream and the chunks of cheese is simply heavenly!

I genuinely regret not buying the whole cake instead of just a slice.

I’m definitely going back. No question about it!

Next, the timeless classic — the Strawberry Shortcake!

An absolute must-order in any Japanese patisserie.

The sponge is wonderfully moist, and the rich, sweet whipped cream is irresistible.

And here’s the bonus: there are two layers of fresh cream — pure indulgence!

Then there’s the Fresh Chocolate Cake, layered with homemade strawberry confiture!

Another guaranteed crowd-pleaser!

This one also features a deluxe double-layer combo — confiture and fresh cream stacked together in pure perfection!

The kids had been eyeing the cakes the whole time I was photographing them.

“How long are you going to keep taking pictures?!” they protested.

Their eyes were dead serious.

Verdict: a huge GOOD from the family!

My older child immediately begged, “Bring some home again next time!” ♪

I picked up some baked goods too!

Almond slice cookies, chocolate chip cookies, vanilla cookies,

and the shop’s signature Nikofuru Madeleine!

The cookies are wonderfully crisp with a gentle, mellow sweetness — ideal for pairing with coffee or tea.

And the madeleine, named after the shop itself, is an exclusive original you can only find here!

It carries a fresh, fragrant hint of lemon — a beautifully refreshing lemon madeleine!

Absolutely delicious ♪

These baked treats are the kind you sneak home and savor during a quiet grown-up moment ☆彡
