Introducing Passerelle Yamato Town Gymnasium

Hello travelers! I’m Aikero, a writer for Sarukuma.

Today I’m introducing a hidden gem located in Yamato Town, Kamimashiki District:
Passerelle Yamato Town Comprehensive Gymnasium.
I learned about this spot during a recent cafΓ© interview in Yamato Town!

So what does “Passerelle” mean?
The name comes from the French word for “bridge,” inspired by Yamato Town’s iconic Tsujun Bridge.

It was selected through a public naming competition!
The stylish, charming sound gives it a friendly feel that’s instantly endearing.

The parking lot is spacious!
Even during my visit when there was a bustling event, plenty of parking was still available. The facility offers an arena, martial arts hall, training room, conference rooms, and more β€” versatile for all kinds of activities.
Head up the stairs to the second floor and you’ll find a comfortable lounge.
It’s completely free to use!

There’s also an elevator, so visitors with strollers or wheelchairs can access everything with ease. The second floor has spectator seats β€” but what’s that “running road”?The track actually loops around the spectator seating!
Since it’s indoors, you can exercise even on rainy days.

And don’t forget to look up at the ceiling!
It’s beautifully crafted with locally sourced wood from Yamato Town, and the facility has won the Kumamoto Prefecture Wood Utilization Excellent Facility Award.

This award recognizes outstanding facilities that promote the use and demand for prefecture-sourced wood β€” a real point of pride for the local community.
Here are the usage fees.
Non-residents of Yamato Town are also welcome β€” please check the official website for full details. There’s even a nursing room!
I forgot to check the inside, so for details about the equipment, please contact the facility directly. This is wonderful news β€” you can come empty-handed and still have a great time! From the lounge, you can see a construction site outside.
It’s a brand-new park scheduled to be completed in April!
It will be a spacious park featuring large play equipment.

Yamato Town is over an hour’s drive from central Kumamoto City.
Kids can get bored on the long ride…

But once the new park is finished, they can run around to their heart’s content β€” and they’re guaranteed to fall fast asleep on the way home! (laughs)There are also vending machines for ice cream and drinks β€” perfect for refueling!

Why You Should Visit Passerelle Yamato Town Gymnasium

The number one highlight is this incredible bouldering wall!
It’s free for anyone to use.

You’ll see it right in front of you as soon as you walk into the gymnasium.Important: Use requires a minimum of 2 people β€” one climber plus one spotter for safety!
I visited on a Sunday, and lots of kids were having a blast.
My daughter eagerly took on the challenge!
While there’s a soft padded mat below, parents must always stay directly beneath their child to spot them and ensure safety.Looking at it from the side, you can really see the wall has serious incline and height!
Despite shouting “This is too hard! I give up!” she made it all the way to the top.And here’s me, a 37-year-old trying to look cool in front of my daughter.
(Safety confirmed β€” no other children were nearby.)

Once I started climbing, I realized it was higher than it looked!Once you see this climbing wall, you simply have to try it!
And since it’s indoors, you can play even on rainy days.

Whether you’re a local or just passing through Yamato Town on a road trip, Passerelle Yamato Town Gymnasium is the perfect spot for kids to burn energy and have fun. Be sure to drop by!
