About Bunshodo Cafe

Hello travelers, this is Aikero, your Sarukuma writer.

Today I’m introducing a delightful spot located in Kokonoka-machi, Hitoyoshi City:
Bunshodo Cafe.

Since I made the trip all the way to Hitoyoshi, I was determined to find something delicious — and this gem did not disappoint! (●^o^●)

Earlier that day, I visited the Hitoyoshi Railway Museum MOZOCA Station 868, which is just about a 5-minute drive from Bunshodo Cafe.
I’ve covered it in detail in another article — it’s a perfect family outing spot, so be sure to check it out if you haven’t already! (^^)/

Also just a 5-minute drive away inside HASSENBA HITOYOSHI KUMAGAWA, you’ll find Kyushu Pancake Cafe Hitoyoshi HASSENBA, which I’ve previously introduced.
The signature Kyushu Pancake mix is famous for its moist, chewy texture — many home bakers swear by it!
At the cafe, you can enjoy fluffy pancakes and savory galettes.
Sweets always have their own stomach, right? It’s perfect for a cafe-hopping adventure! (●^o^●)

Bunshodo is a company headquartered right here in Hitoyoshi.
They began as a stationery and office supply business and have since expanded into e-commerce and more.
Did you know this same company runs a cafe serving incredible sweets made from sweet potatoes grown on their own farm?

Stationery, a private farm, sweet potatoes, and a cafe — at first glance, the connection might seem puzzling.
But as they say, seeing is believing! Let me show you around.Bunshodo Cafe sits along Hitoyoshi’s main street.
Parking is generous, with spots in front of the building and additional covered spaces tucked toward the back — easy to pull in even for nervous drivers. There are two entrances: one along the riverside opposite the road, and another right in front of the covered parking area.
I hesitated at first thinking, “Wait, is this the right way in?” — but rest assured, both entrances are correct! (^^)/
Step inside, and here’s what you’ll see — Bunshodo Cafe‘s cozy interior with several inviting tables.

True to its stationery-company roots, the cafe also displays beautifully curated stationery and IKEA goods for sale.
It’s a treat to browse while you wait for your order!
But wait — there’s more seating! Walk through the riverside door, climb up these stairs, and…
…you can dine outdoors with a stunning view of the Kuma River!
The sky was cloudy on my visit, but the open-air atmosphere was still wonderfully refreshing.Back inside, you’ll be greeted by a beautiful lineup of sweet potato desserts!Right next to them — a colorful gelato display! The vivid purple is made from purple sweet potato. Such a gorgeous shade! Here’s the menu:
Aged Honey-Roasted Sweet Potato (Beni Haruka variety)
 Small ¥285
 Regular ¥408
Mentaiko Cream Pasta ¥876
Tuna Tomato Cream Pasta ¥774

It’s not just sweets — they offer lunch options like sweet potato tempura and pasta dishes too!And here are the desserts:
Honey Sweet Potato Brûlée ¥420
Honey Sweet Potato Pudding ¥240
Gelato (Single) ¥380

Brûlée, sundae, pudding, gelato, shake… how on earth do you choose?!

Bunshodo Cafe Recommended Menu Items

After much deliberation, here’s what I ordered!
Gelato, plus a mystery item in the paper bag — what could it be?Ta-da!
The Honey Sweet Potato Brûlée! (#^.^#)
Crack through that fragrant, golden caramel top with a satisfying snap!
Underneath, the texture is silky and smooth, with the rich aroma of butter and sweet potato filling your mouth.
Can you see it?
Dig deeper and you’ll discover honey-roasted sweet potato hiding at the bottom!
What a delicious surprise! And here’s the gelato — purple sweet potato paired with locally made Kuma no Megumi yogurt.
The purple sweet potato delivers a deep, rich flavor, while the yogurt gelato offers a light, refreshing tang that cleanses the palate beautifully.
Both were absolutely fantastic!

The Yatsushiro–Hitoyoshi expressway is toll-free, making this an easy drive for a sweet escape.
Come treat yourself to delicious sweet potato desserts at Bunshodo Cafe! (^^)/
