Introducing Katete Kumamoto Nishi-ku Store
Hello travelers! This is Aikero, writer for Sarukuma.
Quick question: when you hear the word “muffin,” what comes to mind?
Honestly, I always pictured a dry pastry that sucks all the moisture out of your mouth (sorry, muffins!).
But then I discovered a muffin so good I’d happily eat one all on its own…!
Today I’m introducing a charming bakery in Joudai, Nishi Ward, Kumamoto City:
Katete Kumamoto Nishi-ku Store.
If you’re exploring the Joudai area, we’ve previously featured Chinese Cuisine Hirota nearby—definitely worth checking out too!
Chinese Cuisine Hirota (Kamitakahashi, Nishi Ward, Kumamoto City) — Outstanding Value Chinese Lunch!
Here’s the storefront… but wait!
Look closely at the logo—you’ll spot the word “Amakusa.”
That’s because the original Katete is based in Amakusa, and this Kumamoto Nishi-ku branch only opened in April of this year! (●^o^●)
Yes, the photo is heavily pixelated, sorry about that! There’s parking for 3 cars right in front of the store.
The road runs right past the entrance, so please be extra careful when parking and pulling out!
There’s also additional parking for 3 more cars diagonally across the street.
Unfortunately I don’t have a photo, but there’s a clearly marked sign with the Katete logo. For full details, check Katete Kumamoto Nishi-ku’s Instagram (>_<).
Inside, the space is simple, clean, and spacious.
Strollers are welcome too—great news for traveling families! ♪
Katete’s muffins are made using lots of fresh ingredients sourced from Amakusa and around Kumamoto.
Producer names are even displayed, giving you that extra sense of trust and connection to the local farmers ♪
Take a look at this lineup of muffins!
The flavors rotate weekly, so what you see in these photos may not be available on your visit.

Katete Kumamoto Nishi-ku Store: Recommended Menu

Here’s what I picked up (^^)/
Keeping with the Amakusa theme, I styled them on a plate I bought during a trip to Amakusa (^○^)
Amakusa Salted Caramel Muffin, Matcha Milk Muffin, and Summer Stollen Scone!
The Matcha Milk Muffin and Summer Stollen Scone were both that week’s featured flavors ♪
They’re roughly the size of your fist—generous and satisfying! (●^o^●)
Even the clear packaging is adorable!
So cute you’ll want to walk around showing them off, lol!
They include a shop card and a guide on storage and reheating—super helpful for enjoying them later at your hotel or guesthouse ♪
And wow—just wow!
Crispy on the outside, incredibly moist and fluffy inside!
No dryness whatsoever—if you squeezed it (which you wouldn’t!), it would just spring back together.
The gentle saltiness of locally-sourced Amakusa salt paired with the sweet caramel was elegant and balanced. It disappeared in moments (●^o^●)
The Summer Stollen Scone tasted exactly like stollen in scone form.
The liqueur flavor is mild, making it easy for anyone to enjoy—perfect for finishing in one sitting ♫
These are so good I want to share them with my kids—but they might never go back to other muffins again!
Filled with deep love for hometown Amakusa, Katete’s fluffy and moist muffins are a must-try.
The ever-changing weekly lineup keeps every visit exciting!
I can’t wait to discover new flavors on my next trip ♫
