Welcome to Yomoyama Gengakudo
Hello travelers! Aikero here, your Sarukuma writer.
Today I’m taking you to a wonderful little spot in Kawashiri, Minami-ku, Kumamoto City
— Kissa Yomoyama Gengakudo, a café where coffee meets live guitar music.
If you’re already exploring the area, you’ll find Koshindo Curry — previously featured on Sarukuma — just a stone’s throw away.
Located near Kawashiri Station along the historic old town road, this café might already look familiar to some of you — “I’ve seen that place before!” is a common reaction (^O^)
There are two parking areas available.
Let’s start with the first one (^^)/
From the Kawashiri Station Entrance intersection, head straight toward Kawashiri Station!
You’ll spot a gravel parking lot immediately on your right.
Look for the green and white sign reading “MYC Guitar Classroom / Yomoyama Gengakudo” — that’s your landmark!
There are 2 spaces in front of the sign reserved for café customers — feel free to use them ♪
If those spots are full, just keep going to reach the second parking area (^^)/

Pass the gravel lot, then turn right at the apartment building across from Koshindo Curry.

A short way down, you’ll see another gravel parking lot on your right!
You can also access it directly from the road just past the Kawashiri Station Entrance intersection!
This sign marks the spot.
Here’s the full layout of the second parking lot —
Yomoyama Gengakudo’s space is spot No. 8.
It’s just before the green traffic cone.
The numbering can be a bit tricky, so double-check before parking (^^)/
Once you’ve parked, let’s head into the café! ♪
The interior is cozy and intimate, but stroller-friendly.
They even have a Bumbo baby seat — perfect for parents traveling with little ones ♪
The first thing that catches your eye when you step inside is this!
Starting this year, on Saturdays and Sundays from 2:00 to 3:00 PM, you can enjoy LIVE guitar music as your café BGM!
The owner himself — a guitar instructor — performs the sets ♪
And a manga collection — what a treat!
Beautiful guitar displays line the back wall!
So stylish…
The door on the left leads to the restroom.
Water is self-service.
The owner also sells handmade goods on the side!
And about that crepe menu above… we’ll get into all the delicious details later (^○^)
The “Yomoyama Gohan” lunch is a playful surprise — the menu changes on the owner’s whim!
(Prices revised June 2024.)
There are also wallet-friendly light meals.
And for dessert — crepes!!
The “Yokubari Crepe” lets you choose 3 toppings to customize your own creation (●^o^●)
The drink menu covers everything from coffee to soft drinks.
And there’s more than just lunch on offer!
Once a month, board game days and music event days bring a lively buzz to the café (^^)/
With the guitar classroom right next door, music feels wonderfully close at hand ♪
★ Outside food and drinks are not permitted (baby food for little ones is the only exception)!
Recommended Menu at Yomoyama Gengakudo

Yomoyama Gohan — the owner’s whimsical weekly-changing set menu (drink included until 3:00 PM) — ¥990
(Prices revised June 2024.)
・A BIG portion of Yurinchi (Chinese-style fried chicken with sweet vinegar sauce)
・Comforting Nikujaga (meat and potato stew)
・Egg & macaroni salad
・Chinese cabbage pickles
・Onion soup and rice
(Two mains?!)
(Can I really finish all this?)
(Insanely good value, right?!)
I know exactly what you’re thinking!
The Yurinchi piece is so generous it rivals even the most famously big-portion teishoku spots in Japan!
Can you tell from this photo just how massive this piece is?
And — sorry, everyone! I forgot to snap a photo of the nikujaga (:_;)
The chunky potatoes are infused with deep, savory flavor all the way through — honestly, you’ll wonder which dish is the actual main!
Even the soup is loaded with hearty chunks of vegetables!
A true rice thief, spotted!
The fluffy, perfectly cooked rice keeps you coming back for more ♪
For my set drink, I went with mango juice.
Here’s a sweet little secret — at Yomoyama Gengakudo, every day of the month containing a “9” is Special Crepe Day!
A new original crepe is created every month!
On Crepe Days, in addition to the limited-edition crepe, the four standard crepes are available at a steal — just ¥330!
This month featured the Milky Strawberry Mousse Strawberry Mille-feuille Crepe — ¥690
After such a hearty lunch, I couldn’t quite finish it on the spot, so I took it to go (¥10 for the bag).

Like the lunch sets, the crepes are seriously generous in size!
Tucked inside is homemade mousse and caramel nuts, so every bite stays interesting right to the end ♪
Tables, lunches, and crepes can all be reserved in advance — booking ahead makes things smooth (^○^)
