Ben×Ben: Kumamoto’s Brown Bento Specialist
Please note: This shop has permanently closed. The article below is preserved as a record of our visit.
Hello, travelers! This is Asukarando, a writer for Sarukuma — your guide to discovering hidden food gems in Kumamoto.
Today I want to introduce you to a wonderfully unique bento shop in the Takahira neighborhood of Kita Ward, Kumamoto City
Ben×Ben — The Brown Bento Specialist
Ben×Ben opened on July 1, 2024 with a slogan that immediately won me over: “Brown is Justice.” If you’ve ever been to Japan, you’ll know that the most delicious comfort foods — fried chicken, soy-glazed meats, golden fried things — all share that gorgeous brown color. I had to check it out!
Parking is available right in front of the shop, so it’s easy to drop by even with kids in tow.
Inside, Ben×Ben has a stylish, warm wooden interior. There’s even a curious “ゆ” (yu) symbol — the traditional kanji you’d see at a Japanese hot spring — tucked away in the back. A fun little Japanese touch!

…and more.
For travelers in a hurry, ready-made bento boxes are stocked on the counter for a quick grab-and-go meal. But if you’d rather have it freshly cooked, just place an order — they’ll prepare it from scratch for you!
Ladies’ Bento — 500 yen
A delightful sampler featuring karaage, spring rolls, Japanese rolled omelet (tamagoyaki), sesame balls, and salad. A fantastic combination if you want to try a little of everything!
Karaage Tamago-Toji Donburi (Egg-Bound Karaage Rice Bowl) — 650 yen
A combo that just sounds like it was made for rice — but somehow I’d never tried this before!

Squid Tartar Bento — 700 yen
Brown on brown — this one is guaranteed delicious!
And here’s a delightful surprise — Ben×Ben isn’t just about brown bento!
They also serve traditional Japanese dango (rice dumplings)!

5 skewers — 900 yen
“Anko Hill” (Sweet Red Bean Paste Dango)

The fun part? They coat the skewers with sauce or kinako powder fresh after you order — so each dango arrives perfectly glazed!
The owner uses soy sauce sourced from Ashikita — their hometown in Kumamoto Prefecture — which gives the dishes a beautifully sweet-savory finish unique to the region.
Meet the friendly owner! Always cheerful and especially kind to children — a real gem of a host.
Ben×Ben: My Recommendations
I went with today’s Daily Special Bento (600 yen)!
※ Pro tip: the regular Karaage Bento is 640 yen, so getting it on a karaage daily-special day is a great deal!
Karaage — the king of all brown bento foods!
Maybe it’s the soy-sauce marinade, but the brown is even deeper and richer here.
Made from juicy chicken thigh, this karaage leans more toward succulent and tender than ultra-crispy — and it’s packed with flavor.
One bite of this savory, soy-soaked karaage and you’ll instantly want a mouthful of rice — that’s how perfectly seasoned it is!
The rice is cooked to just the right texture. Honestly delicious!
And the potato salad tucked into the bento is just lovely!
Here’s the daily special calendar.
Look at this lineup — each one looks more delicious than the last.
Definitely a place worth coming back to again and again!
Of course, I had to try the dango too!
I went with the Mitarashi Swamp, Kinako Mountain, and Anko Hill (^^)
Watching the dango grilled right in front of you
The toasted color is just gorgeous, isn’t it?
Behold — the Mitarashi Swamp!
The dango are completely drenched in that sweet-savory mitarashi sauce!
And here’s the Kinako Mountain — buried under generous heaps of sweet, nutty soybean flour!
My child was completely captivated by the friendly owner, the irresistible bento aromas, and watching the dango being made right before our eyes!
“Brown is Justice”
Ben×Ben proudly celebrates the rich, comforting brown foods that Japanese cuisine does so well. Which brown bento would have been your favorite? Sadly, this beloved shop is now closed — but the memories of those soy-glazed bites and freshly grilled dango live on!
And the dango too! (*^.^*)
