A Sarukuma writer visits Ferme Catherine, a charming sweet potato food truck operating throughout Kumamoto City. Prices start from 400 yen. We’ve also covered family-friendly tips, access information, and operating hours.

Introducing Ferme Catherine

Hello travelers! This is Sukarando, writer for Sarukuma.

Today I’d like to introduce a wonderful food truck called
Ferme Catherine.

If you’re a sweet potato fan visiting Kumamoto, you’ve struck gold! This delightful food truck specializes entirely in Japanese sweet potato (satsumaimo) creations.

The truck features a calming green and off-white color scheme, and there are mini tables and chairs set up in front β€” perfect for kids and great for enjoying your treats fresh while you wait!

Here’s what’s on the Ferme Catherine menu!

Daigaku-imo Kenpi (candied sweet potato sticks): 400 yen

Imo Kenpi (crispy sweet potato sticks): 400 yen

Farmer’s Roasted Sweet Potato: 450 yen

Roasted Sweet Potato & Cream Cheese Tempura: 350 yen

Ikinari Roasted Sweet Potato Tempura: 350 yen

The sweet potatoes are slow-roasted in a traditional kamado oven for three hours!

Yes β€” this is a paradise for true sweet potato enthusiasts!

What’s even more impressive is that they use different varieties of sweet potatoes for different menu items, carefully selecting each one to bring out the best flavor.

Each item is fried fresh after you order, so it takes a few extra minutes β€” but the trade-off is piping-hot, just-made deliciousness.
If you take some home, the staff recommends reheating in a toaster oven for the best texture.

Recommended Menu Items at Ferme Catherine

I tried the Farmer’s Roasted Sweet Potato, the Ikinari Roasted Sweet Potato Tempura, and the Imo Kenpi!

First up β€” the intriguing Ikinari Roasted Sweet Potato Tempura.

Since it’s fried to order, it arrives steaming hot! The tempura batter is crispy and lightly sweet β€” absolutely delicious.

Fun fact: “Ikinari” comes from “Ikinari Dango,” a beloved local Kumamoto sweet that combines sweet potato and sweet bean paste!

Inside the tempura, you’ll find sweet red bean paste (anko) tucked alongside skin-on roasted sweet potato β€” and the flavor is out of this world!

The sweet potato is wonderfully creamy and naturally sweet. Yes, the anko is sweet too, but it’s never cloying β€” the natural sweetness of the potato truly shines through.

Honestly, this is championship-level delicious!

Next, the Imo Kenpi.

These thin, crispy fried sweet potato sticks are coated with a gentle sweetness β€” perfectly snackable and addictively crunchy!

I had a small Roasted Sweet Potato as well. The skin is edible too, and unlike the tempura version, this one had a fluffy, mellow sweetness that’s pure comfort food.

And finally β€” I just couldn’t resist β€”

I had to try the Roasted Sweet Potato & Cream Cheese Tempura too!

The combination of cream cheese and roasted sweet potato was so good, I felt like I’d been missing out my entire life!

This is a must-try β€” I genuinely recommend it to everyone!
