Today I’m taking you to a delightful spot in Kojima, Nishi Ward, Kumamoto City:
Fam-oshima- (ファムオシマ).

The neighborhood has plenty to explore — Kojima Park, which we’ve featured before, is just nearby. It has a great parking lot, lots of play equipment, and a dedicated toddler area, making it a fantastic stop for families with little ones. If you’re lucky, you might even spot glider training sessions on the riverbank near the park (^○^)
There’s also a wonderfully stylish, modern rabbit-themed café run by a soy sauce maker — definitely worth a visit!

Fam-oshima- (ファムオシマ) is a fabulous all-in-one destination — a fresh produce market, bakery, cake shop, and café all under one roof!

The owner previously ran a greengrocer at Tasaki Market, and his three daughters — each with experience in cake-making, baking, and café service — joined forces to launch this beautiful family-run spot together (^^)/
Just look at that gorgeous exterior!
I was curious where exactly in Kojima it would be — and sure enough, true to its tagline “a complex shop in the middle of the fields,” it sits surrounded by farmland with no other shops nearby.

That said, if you follow your GPS navigation, you’ll have no trouble finding it ♪Parking is available right in front of Fam-oshima-, on both sides of the building.

On the way to the shop, you’ll also see signs pointing to overflow parking, so if the main lot is full, you can use those spots instead.
The grass area, though roped off in this photo, is now open for parking too.
On the day I visited, there was a fun “stuff-as-much-as-you-can” vegetable event going on!I didn’t get to participate this time, but I couldn’t help wondering — how on earth do you stuff cabbages and daikon radishes into a bag?!These stuff-it-yourself events are held irregularly going forward (●＾o＾●)

The shop itself is gorgeous, and just look at that stylish logo (^○^)Right at the entrance, you’re greeted by colorful displays of vegetables and fruits!
Those strawberries you can spot in the corner are sourced directly from local farmers.The café is on the right side of the entrance.
The interior is bright, clean, and welcoming.Since I arrived in the late afternoon, I didn’t get to try the café this time — but next visit, I’m definitely coming for lunch!

[Limited to 10 servings] Fam’s Special Dago-jiru — ¥1,580 (with chawanmushi steamed egg custard, no potage soup)

All of the above come with a hearty set menu:

There’s also the [Limited to 10 servings] Weekday-Only Fam Enjoyment Set — ¥1,580, which comes with a daily dessert!

Since I didn’t dine in this time, I don’t have photos, but there’s a lovely salad bar at the back.
On the opposite side from the café, all the way at the back, you’ll find the bakery section.
The photo’s been brightened a bit — in person, the lighting is a touch dimmer.

The restrooms are located behind the bakery section.

So many breads packed with vegetables!
I’ve never seen a curry pan with the filling spilling out of the top before — it looked amazing (^O^)Prices are very reasonable, which makes it tempting to grab one of everything ♪Between the bakery and the produce section is the cake counter!

By late afternoon, the cake selection thins out, so if you want the full lineup to choose from, I highly recommend visiting in the morning (>_<)

One of the best parts is that the fruits used in the cakes change with the seasons — there’s always something new to try ♪

I finally got to come back for that long-awaited lunch!
I tried calling for a reservation a few times, and there were occasions when even a week in advance was fully booked!
If you have a specific date in mind, I strongly recommend booking early ♫
This time, I called 6 days ahead and managed to secure a spot (^^)/

The shop opens at 11:00 AM, so I booked for 11:00.
When I walked in, every seat was already reserved!
There’s a 90-minute time limit per seating, so even if you arrive at opening time without a reservation, the earliest you’ll likely be seated is 12:30 PM.
So for the smoothest experience at Fam-oshima- (ファムオシマ), reservations are highly recommended!

Here’s the Hamburg Steak with Kinpira Gobo.
All 6 small side dishes are vegetable-based!
A meal at Fam-oshima- (ファムオシマ) might just hit your daily veggie quota in one sitting ♪The hamburg steak was absolutely packed with burdock root — way more than I expected!
The combination of crunchy gobo and fluffy hamburg is just incredible…!
And the sauce is fantastic too!!And here’s the Pork Cutlet with Japanese-Style Sauce.
Topped generously with an onion-based Japanese sauce.
It’s bold in flavor with a lovely sweetness from the onions — this sauce is a winner (^^)/Beyond the veggies, the 5-grain rice is a delightful touch ♫
The pork cutlet is thick and satisfying!
It’s a vegetable-forward lunch, but trust me — you’ll leave very full!

Recommended Menu Items at Fam-oshima-(ファムオシマ)

Stocks were running low, but I just managed to grab a Fruit Tart, a Caramel Nut Banana Tart, and a Pudding à la Mode ♪The fruit was incredibly juicy, the tart shell wonderfully crisp, and the cream had just the right level of subtle sweetness, letting the fresh fruit shine through (●＾o＾●)This tart is loaded with chunky nuts and stands quite tall.
The caramel isn’t overpoweringly sweet, and bananas plus nuts is just an unbeatable combo (#^.^#)
The Caramel Banana Nut Tart was my personal favorite (^O^)／

The pudding has a firmer, jiggly texture rather than the runny style (^.^)
