Today I’m taking you to Tetorihoncho in Kumamoto’s Chuo Ward to visit
FUNNY STORY — a charming little spot you’ll want to add to your Kumamoto itinerary.

FUNNY STORY opened its doors on December 8, 2023, serving up Hong Kong-style egg waffles.
Never heard of egg waffles? You’re not alone! These bubbly, golden-brown treats are a beloved street food in Hong Kong, where they’re known as “gai daan jai.”
Tucked away on the back street behind Kumamoto City Hall, FUNNY STORY transforms throughout the day — a sweets shop by day and a cozy bar by night.
The cozy 5-tsubo (about 16 square meters) shop is run by a wonderful mother-daughter duo. They previously ran a takoyaki stall at festivals, and after a successful crowdfunding campaign, they made their dream of opening a sweets shop a reality.
Seating is counter-only, but strollers are welcome inside.
Bonus for travelers — there are 6 power outlets along the counter!

I went with the strawberry and mixed berry egg waffles (¥650 each).
The sweet, buttery aroma drifting from the iron while they cooked was absolutely irresistible.
When they arrived at the counter, I was surprised at how generous the portions were!
And don’t miss the adorable mini-shovel spoons — they’re an Instagram-worthy detail kids absolutely love!
There are so many ways to enjoy these waffles — scoop out the filling, dip the bubbly waffle into the cream, or fold it up like a hot dog and dig in. If you’re getting it to go, the staff will pack it carefully in a paper bag so it stays upright.
Here’s a fun surprise: as you work your way through the whipped cream, you’ll discover a hidden layer of crunchy granola.
That extra texture takes the experience to the next level.
Despite their hearty size, the waffles themselves are light, fluffy, and only lightly sweet — delicious on their own, and even better dipped in the whipped cream.
I thought the portion might be too much for a child, but my 3rd-grade son polished his off all by himself!
