Introducing Iriya Udon
Hello travelers! This is Igaguri, writer for [SaruKuma].
Today I’m introducing a beloved local spot on Chuo-dori in Yamaga City—
[Iriya Udon].

If you’re craving udon in Yamaga, this is the place to go!
It’s so popular that it’s hard to get a table—we finally got our chance!

You’ll find it right at the famous McDonald’s intersection!

Right next door is another local favorite—Sapporo Ramen “Dosanko.”
The two restaurants share a parking lot, and it’s almost always full.

Interestingly, Dosanko Yamaga is famous more for its cheese katsu set meal than its ramen!
We arrived just past 1 p.m. on a Saturday, and Iriya Udon was completely full too.
Since we had kids with us, we waited about 10 minutes—and the smell of fried food drifting from next door was seriously tempting!

Here’s a peek inside Iriya Udon.
This photo shows the seating to the right of the entrance.
On the left, there are about four more table-and-chair seats.

We were seated right in front of where the udon is hand-pounded—my child was completely fascinated!
The rhythmic “ton-ton-ton” sound of dough being pounded fills the restaurant the whole time, creating a wonderfully authentic atmosphere.

There’s even a chart of Kumamoto dialect words on display. After eight years of living in Kumamoto, I could only recognize about 10 of them—lol!
I have a feeling my kids will end up knowing more than me before long.

Here’s the menu.

I was told the kayaku gohan (Japanese mixed rice cooked with vegetables) is especially popular.
Set meals starting in the 700-yen range are a real bargain!
The curry udon set even comes with a side of plain white rice (whoa!)
It’ll definitely pair perfectly—and I’ll definitely eat all of it.
Iriya Udon Recommended Menu

Zaru Udon (chilled udon with dipping sauce) — 550 yen
Soft yet pleasantly chewy—easy for kids to enjoy too! ☆

Ebi Tempura Udon (shrimp tempura udon) — 850 yen
The dashi broth is gentle and absolutely addictive!

The shrimp tempura is huge and beautifully plump!
It was so impressive I half-wondered if it might actually be Japanese spiny lobster—it tasted seriously upscale.

Curry Udon — 700 yen
You can pour the curry broth over the udon, dip the noodles into it, or even sip it on its own—however you like!

Soft, gentle udon noodles paired beautifully with curry rich with melted onion!
It’s not spicy at all, so as long as you don’t mind some splatters (lol), it’s great for kids too. ◎
The mellow dashi-based handmade udon pairs perfectly with Yamaga’s charming, traditional streetscape—it’s easy to see why this place is so beloved!

Right next door, you’ll find a barbershop and—

—a kazoku-buro (private family bath), making this a perfect spot to enjoy the full Yamaga experience! (^_-)-☆
