Introducing Joan
Hello, this is Gussan, writer for SaruKuma!
Today I’m introducing a casual dining restaurant called [Joan], located in Sadowara, Higashi-ku, Kumamoto City.
The stylish exterior is surrounded by lush green plants.
It has such an extraordinary feel that you’ll think you’ve arrived at a tropical resort.
The spacious parking lot right out front makes it easy to park.
On this day, the restaurant was nearly full inside, but there was still plenty of room in the parking lot.
The parking lot is split in two by this signboard, but you can also use the larger lot next door.
The weather was beautiful, making the greenery scattered around the property look even more vibrant.
Now, let’s head inside!
There are plenty of houseplants inside the restaurant as well.
The atmosphere is bright, open, and incredibly stylish.
The chairs are designed to help you relax and unwind, so you’ll feel like staying forever.
In addition to indoor table seats, there are terrace seats too.
The sunny terrace seating offers an even more open and airy atmosphere.
Joan Recommended Menu
The lunch menu.
For an additional 480 yen, you can add a half-portion of pasta — perfect for sharing with a small child!
You can also upgrade the petite dessert to a slice of cheesecake or gateau chocolat for an extra 300 yen.
There’s also a wide variety of desserts.
Beer, wine, and sparkling wine are available too.
I ordered the Pasta Lunch (1,580 yen) — Shiso Leaf Genovese.
The set includes:
salad of the day, seasonal soup, homemade focaccia, shiso leaf genovese pasta, petite dessert, and one drink.
*Focaccia refills are free.
The first thing brought to the table was the salad — beautifully colorful and charming.
I never can remember the name of those colorful little crunchy bits on top…
A ginger ale to drink, piping hot homemade focaccia, and the soup of the day.
On this day, the soup was a chilled corn soup — gentle and rich with the natural sweetness of corn.
The main dish — shiso leaf genovese.
The pasta was generously coated in fragrant genovese sauce, and the pine nuts added a perfect crunchy accent!

My friend ordered the
Meatloaf Lunch (1,680 yen)
The set includes salad of the day, seasonal soup, homemade focaccia, meatloaf, petite dessert, and one drink.
*Focaccia refills are free.
It was surprisingly thick!
Slicing into it with a knife revealed a dense, meaty interior. This is the ultimate dish for those who crave a serious meat-on-meat experience.
And here’s the Joan Lunch (1,800 yen).
The main course is spare rib confit served with Sicilian-style caponata.
The set includes salad of the day, seasonal soup, homemade focaccia, petite dessert, and one drink —
and you can even add rice on the side.
Look how thick it is! A truly satisfying piece of meat.

The petite dessert after the meal was a refreshingly cool coffee jelly.
The star-shaped dish gave it a charming Tanabata vibe — a delightful little touch.
With its resort-like atmosphere, Joan is perfect not just for lunch, but also for parties with close friends or even special occasions like wedding anniversaries. Be sure to give it a visit!
