Introducing Kodomo Ehon no Ie

Hello travelers! I’m Gachako, a writer for SaruKuma.

Today I’m sharing a wonderful little spot in Shiranui-machi, Uki City:
Kodomo Ehon no Ie (The Children’s Picture Book House).

It sits on the same grounds as the Uki Shiranui Art Museum and Library.
The building was relocated and rebuilt using materials from a “Minna no Ie” (Everyone’s House) — one of the community gathering spaces originally created after the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. The result is a warm, wooden exterior full of character.

The parking lot is spacious.
A charming terrace area sits right next to it — another lovely spot to pause and unwind.

Adorable elephant figures greet you at the entrance.
With such a fairy-tale atmosphere, you’ve already stepped into the world of picture books.

What Makes Kodomo Ehon no Ie Special

On your left as you enter, you’ll find the “Ohanashi no Heya” (Story Room) — a shoe-free space where parents and kids can relax together.

Soft cloth picture books made of felt,

play equipment for climbing and sitting,

plush animals and felt toys,

and even educational toys you can borrow on-site!
(Educational toys may only be used inside the Story Room, for up to 1 hour per session.)

You’ll also discover a delightful collection of international picture books — adults will love them just as much as the kids.

Of course there are plenty of Japanese picture books too — from beloved classics to the newest releases.

To borrow books, you’ll need a library card.
Anyone residing in Japan is eligible to register.

Bring a photo ID showing your name and current address (such as a driver’s license or residence card).
After registering, you can link your account to LINE and even check out books directly through the LINE app.

And take a look at the nursing room!
It’s bright and tidy, with a dedicated diaper disposal bin.
It’s wonderful to see more and more family-friendly facilities like this in Japan — we feel so fortunate.
The restrooms are equally thoughtful, right down to the smallest detail.
We especially love the step stool for little ones — such a sweet touch!

Even the wallpaper is decorated to bring the picture book world to life — absolutely charming.

“Mogu Mogu Time” (Snack Time)
12:00–13:00. Picnic sheets are available to borrow.
This is such a thoughtful service for families traveling with kids and lots of bags.
