2022.06.11

A Sarukuma writer’s first-hand visit to “Orange no Ki,” a charming cafe tucked away in Nakashima, Hikawa Town, Yatsushiro District. Price guide: from 1,100 yen. We also cover family-friendly tips, access, and opening hours.
Welcome to Orange no Ki
Hello travelers! I’m Gachako, a writer for Sarukuma.
Today I’m taking you to Hikawa Town in Yatsushiro District, to a delightful little spot called
【Orange no Ki (おれんじの樹)】.

As you drive past Hikawa Junior High School and head out into the open rice fields, you might start wondering if you’re going the right way…

But don’t worry — clear signposts guide you the whole way, so you’ll arrive without a hitch.

At first glance, you might mistake it for someone’s private home — but rest assured, this is the cafe!
It has a wonderfully hidden, secret-getaway vibe.
The parking lot fits about 6 cars.

Walk around to the back of the parking lot to find the entrance.
What a lovely garden!

Following Japanese custom, you remove your shoes at the entrance and slip into a pair of slippers before stepping inside.
The interior is beautifully styled — warm, calm, and effortlessly elegant.

There are about 6 tables inside.
Even on a weekday, it was already fully booked!
Though I didn’t get a photo, there’s also a private Japanese-style tatami room available.
It’s perfect if you’re visiting with little ones.

Lunch plates start at 1,100 yen.
The day’s menu featured loco moco, hamburger steak with tomato and cheese, shrimp mayo, and yangnyeom (Korean-style sweet & spicy) chicken.

And here it is — the famous Taiwanese-style shaved ice SNOW menu.

・Strawberry Cheesecake SNOW
・Chocolate Mint SNOW
・Special Chocolate SNOW
・Matcha & Sweet Red Bean SNOW
・Hojicha (Roasted Green Tea) & Sweet Red Bean SNOW
・Kinako (Roasted Soybean Flour) & Sweet Red Bean SNOW
Each is 880 yen.
Yikes — how do you choose?!
Orange no Ki: Recommended Menu

I went for the Strawberry Cheesecake SNOW 🍓 (880 yen)!

Unlike traditional shaved ice, the strawberry-milk flavor is frozen right into the ice itself.
The result is wonderfully fluffy, won’t give you a brain freeze, and stays delicious right down to the last bite — that’s the magic of Taiwanese SNOW shaved ice.

Mix in the fresh berries and rich berry sauce for the full effect.
The ice melts away on your tongue with a delicate fizz — absolutely heavenly!
With bites of cheesecake hidden inside, it’s a seriously satisfying dessert.
Seasonal Panna Cotta (900 yen) — I had to try this one too.
Right now it’s melon panna cotta 🍈.
The flavor changes with the seasons, so check their Instagram for the latest version.
Layers of fresh melon, vanilla ice cream studded with beans, yogurt cream, more melon flesh and juice, and silky panna cotta.
It’s a luxurious celebration of green melon that left me feeling truly happy.
It’s the perfect reward treat after a long day.
Actually — you don’t need an excuse. Just go!
Surrounded by the lush green of igusa rush fields, this hidden gem in the heart of Hikawa Town is a must-visit.
