Today I’m taking you to a charming little spot tucked away in Kubota, Kikuyo Town, Kikuchi District, Kumamoto Prefecture — “MATSU COFFEE”.

Hidden in a quiet corner of Kikuyo Town, this stylish cafe truly feels like a secret retreat.

Parking is on the gravel lot behind the shop, so please park there.

At the entrance, you slip off your shoes and change into slippers — a small ritual (and a wonderful Japanese custom) that already gets you in a relaxed, cozy mood.

Inside, you’ll find a curated selection of apparel goods, including stylish shirts. Fashion lovers will want to take their time browsing.

There’s also a table inside if you’d like to enjoy a leisurely tea time in the cozy interior.

At the counter, you can purchase the cafe’s original branded coffee beans. The eye-catching logo makes it hard to resist picking up a bag.

MATSU COFFEE also sells its own stainless steel bottles and tumblers — instant style upgrade for your daily coffee routine!

Pair your coffee with one of their delicious baked goods — as a serious sweets fan, I wanted to try every single one on display.

When my son asked the staff, “Can I play in the sand?”, I was puzzled — until I realized there’s actually a full sandbox play set ready for kids to use!

Watching my son cheerfully shout “I’m an ice cream shop!” while playing made for a memorable visit. It’s truly rare to find a coffee shop where children are this welcomed and entertained.

What’s even more impressive — they even have special slippers prepared for walking out to the sandbox area. The attention to detail here is just incredible!

While my son enjoyed his sand-castle ice cream creations, I ordered the Uji Hojicha Latte (500 yen) — a roasted green tea latte made with premium tea from Uji, Kyoto.

The moment I lifted the cup, the soothing aroma of hojicha drifted up. Even before my first sip, I knew it was going to be amazing.

That first taste delivered a beautifully nutty, toasty flavor that filled my mouth and warmed all the way through. It’s not overly sweet, allowing the natural flavor of the tea to shine — exactly how I love it. (There’s also self-serve syrup available if you want extra sweetness.)

Fun for adults, magical for kids — this is a coffee shop you’ll want to visit with the whole family.
