Introducing mu (Mu)

Hello travelers!
I finally caved and turned on the air conditioning — felt like I’d lost a small battle with summer.
This is Sarukuma writer Binako!

Today I’m taking you to
Sakuragi, Higashi-ku, Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, to a charming little spot called
“mu (Mu)”.

No, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you.

This is a relaxation salon that also sells freshly baked canelés right at the front counter — a lovely little surprise tucked into a quiet Kumamoto neighborhood.

Convenient parking is available right in front of the shop, so driving in is easy.

Apologies for the slightly blurry shot — that one’s on me!

Inside, the salon has a calm, minimalist atmosphere — clean, serene, and instantly relaxing.

You’ll also spot a small selection of herbal teas for sale near the register.

Here’s the canelé menu:
・Canelé Plain, 3-pack (1,220 yen)
・Canelé Plain, 6-pack (2,050 yen)
・Choose-Your-Own 3-pack (1,300 yen)
[Plain / Cinnamon / Chocolate / Orange / Matcha]
・6-Flavor Set (2,250 yen)
[Plain / Cinnamon / Chocolate / Orange / Matcha / 1 seasonal flavor]

If you want to sample as many flavors as possible, the 6-piece set is the way to go.

Important note for visitors: the canelés are sold via online order or advance reservation only.

First up — the cinnamon flavor.

The owner reportedly went through countless test batches to perfect this canelé recipe.
That kind of dedication is genuinely inspiring — something I want to bring into my own work too!

Because the canelés arrive frozen, the recommended approach is to thaw them naturally for about 15 to 30 minutes before eating ♪
The texture changes depending on how long you let them thaw — half the fun is finding your favorite stage!

That signature crisp, caramelized exterior is delicious right from the first bite.

Even half-thawed, the inside is wonderfully chewy and smooth on the palate,
almost like a premium dessert ice cream in texture.

Whether you’re already a canelé devotee or trying one for the very first time, these will absolutely win you over…

You’ll also find a grown-up canelé with a hint of pleasant bitterness,

an adorably pink strawberry canelé bursting with sweet-tart aroma,

a matcha canelé for those craving traditional Japanese flavors,

and a wonderfully zesty lemon canelé with an addictive citrus kick — there’s truly something for every palate ♪

Of course, you can never go wrong with the classic plain canelé — a perfect showcase of the recipe in its purest form!

The rosehip tea I paired with my canelés is packed with benefits travelers tend to appreciate after long sightseeing days,
and best of all — it’s zero calories.

It’s also caffeine-free, making it a great option for expectant mothers.

Since Mu doubles as a relaxation salon, you can pick up your canelés and treat your travel-weary body to a little TLC at the same time ♪

Personally, I had my eye on the “Tummy Care” treatment (6,600 yen)… so tempting, lol.

If you’re exploring eastern Kumamoto City, this hidden gem is well worth a stop!
