A SaruKuma writer visits “Sorashido,” a charming new shop in Kawakage, Minamiaso Village, Aso District. Prices start from just 350 yen, and we cover family-friendly tips, access, and opening hours.

Welcome to Sorashido

Hello, fellow travelers!
I’m Binako, a SaruKuma writer who simply can’t stop eating once I start.

Today I’m taking you to Kawakage, Minamiaso Village, Aso District in Kumamoto Prefecture, to a delightful little shop called “Sorashido”.

I was driving past when I spotted a banner outside what used to be an empty shop reading “Soy milk tofu that tastes like pudding”!

Wait… what?! I made a quick U-turn and pulled right in.

Parking is conveniently located right next to the shop, and the lush greenery around it makes for a lovely first impression.

Inside, you’ll find a charming selection of tableware and miscellaneous goods.

There were even bargain dish sets โ€” 4 plates for just 1,000 yen!
A real treasure trove for anyone who loves Japanese ceramics.

Each handcrafted item is unique โ€” perfect for picking up a one-of-a-kind Kumamoto souvenir.

Toward the back of the shop, there’s a cozy cafe space.

The cafe isn’t open yet, but they’re planning to start service soon.
Definitely a spot worth coming back to once it opens!

And here it is โ€” the star of the show: “Pudding-Style Soy Milk Tofu”
230g pack for 350 yen.

The shop also displays recommended ways to enjoy it, so be sure to snap a photo of the serving suggestions when you visit!

They also stock Akamoku, a wild seaweed harvested from the waters of Amakusa.

I’d been wanting to try akamoku for ages, so finding it here felt like fate.

Sorashido’s Must-Try Menu

This time I picked up:
Pudding-Style Soy Milk Tofu
Yushima Akamoku Seaweed (250 yen)

The tofu comes with its own dipping sauce, so I poured it on for the full experience.Straight in!

One bite, and you’ll get it.
It’s wonderfully smooth and creamy, yet has a satisfying bite โ€” a brand-new tofu texture you won’t have tasted before.

Honestly, can we even still call this tofu?
It’s that rich. It’s that good.

Now, on to the Akamoku!

It’s sold frozen, so I recommend letting it thaw naturally at room temperature before eating.

The shop suggests several different ways to enjoy akamoku, so feel free to experiment.

Ponzu is recommended, but personally I went with just a splash of vinegar.

The texture is wonderfully sticky and slippery โ€” similar to molokhia.
It slides down easily, and that gentle vinegar tang is just perfect.

I have no doubt it would be amazing over a bowl of rice. I’m already imagining all the ways to use it.

You won’t easily find products like these elsewhere โ€” so if you’re traveling through southern Aso, this is a stop you don’t want to miss!
