Welcome to Yakiniku TONBO Arao

Hello, travelers!
This is Igaguri, your Sarukuma writer 🌰

Today I’m taking you to Higashiyakata in Arao City, Kumamoto Prefecture, to a spot called Yakiniku TONBO Arao.

I’d heard the buzz that this place actually gives away fresh vegetables for free, so naturally I had to investigate!

There it is!

Wait… what? Really??

Yep, the sign really does say take some home for free.
No catch.

I half-expected to find a hidden condition, but when I asked the staff, they cheerfully confirmed exactly what the sign said. \(◎o◎)/ haha

Talk about generous!
You can already feel how much this place loves its community and looks after its customers.

Let’s head inside!

That gray mat in the previous photo turned out to be a sanitizing mat!
They’re staying on top of hygiene measures too.

To the left as you walk in is the traditional tatami seating area.

The right side has Western-style table seating (it was busy with customers, so I didn’t snap a photo)!

The tatami area has private rooms and four partitioned booths for extra privacy.
The flower-decorated nook near the front of the tatami area used to be a small kids’ play space stocked with toys.

This restaurant has long been welcoming to families with children — kids’ chairs are available too! (^_-)-☆
They even had birthday photos of past guests on display (⋈◍>◡<◍)。✧♡

What to Order at Yakiniku TONBO Arao

I was visiting solo this time, so I was debating whether to brave a one-person yakiniku session…

The staff recommended their lunch-only steak, so I went with the
Domestic Beef Tenderloin Steak (1,250 yen)!

Salad and soup arrived first to start things off!
Sizzle, sizzle!
Here it comes!!

You can pick how it’s cooked, so I went with rare!
Reliable Japanese-raised beef for just over 1,000 yen — that’s an absolute steal!
And of course, insanely delicious!!

This is exactly what you’d expect from a steak prepared by a yakiniku specialist!

For dessert, a pudding tart (or maybe pudding pie?) — the perfect light finish after a filling steak.

Let me also share what’s on offer for dinner!

I’ve been here for dinner too, and the meat is genuinely outstanding!
No wonder this is known as “the only yakiniku restaurant in Arao serving Akaushi (Japanese red beef).”

To make ordering easier, there’s also a separate photo menu!

Look at that — doesn’t it look incredible?!

Thick-cut beef tongue (gyutan)… my absolute favorite.

And there’s even a kids-sized bibimbap on the menu!

But the showstopper that absolutely caught my eye is the Meat Staircase!

A Meat Cake!!

So Instagram-worthy!!
Perfect for celebrating a birthday (^_-)-☆

Yakiniku and beer — a match made in heaven!
All-you-can-drink options are also available ♪

They even have “mocktails”non-alcoholic cocktails for those who’d rather skip the booze (^^♪

And there’s a salad bar plus all-you-can-eat soft serve ice cream! (#^^#)

Whether you stop by for lunch or dinner, you’re in for a treat.
If you’re exploring Kumamoto, definitely add this spot to your list! ☺
