Introducing Atsuatsu Tempura Toranosuke

Today we’re heading to Yatakubo, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City, to visit
“Atsuatsu Tempura Toranosuke” — a tempura shop that’s been making serious waves in the local food scene.

I dropped by for Sunday lunch and found a crowd already gathered out front — I waited a full 30 minutes to get in!
This place is seriously popular 😮

From the outside, it looks like it might be a fancy, hard-to-enter spot. But not at all —
it’s a relaxed, easy-to-walk-into counter-style tempura shop 💛

It sits along Yatakubo Hondori Street,
right next door to Magnolia, the koppe-pan (Japanese sandwich roll) specialty shop we featured on SaruKuma a while back. (^ ^)

There’s parking for about 10 cars, mostly in front of the shop.

Each piece of tempura can be enjoyed your way — dipped in tentsuyu (savory tempura broth) or coated in sweet tendon sauce, one piece at a time (=^^=)

Finally — I’m inside ✨
It’s counter seating only, with just over 10 seats.

The chef fries everything fresh in the corner, right in front of you!

Plenty of other set meals to choose from too.

Love that you can order extra à la carte items (=^^=). Alcohol is available too, making it a great dinner option as well!

BOOM!!!!!
The Cho-Tendon (Super Tempura Bowl) — 1,180 yen

Plus 2 shrimp and 2 vegetable tempura. And then…

The signature soft-boiled toro-tama egg 🥚
That perfect runny center is pure craftsmanship!

No words needed (laughs).
It’s deliciousness you can SEE (=^^=)
The bowl comes with miso soup, ika no shiokara (salted squid), pickled ginger, and kimchi! Even the nori (seaweed) tempura is wonderfully crisp.

And here we have the
Okonomi Teishoku (Choose-Your-Own Set Meal) — 900 yen!
It begins with miso soup studded with chopped mitsuba (Japanese parsley), tentsuyu broth with grated daikon, and a side set of salted squid, pickled ginger, and kimchi. Standby ready!

And then — fresh-from-the-fryer tempura, right in front of you 😍

It begins with shrimp, pork, eggplant, and pumpkin.
The pork tempura was so crispy it tasted like a snack 🤩

And there’s more — squid, white fish, and green pepper. Seven different items in total.

Drizzle on a little of that sweet tendon sauce…

Eat it tendon-style, dip it in tentsuyu broth, or sprinkle on the matcha salt provided at the counter — every piece is a different little adventure!

I really did get to enjoy a world-first tempura experience! 😄✨
And the flavor? Absolutely outstanding.

Good news — families with kids are welcome!
Just note there are no children’s chairs, so it works best for kids old enough to sit calmly at the counter.
