Welcome to DOBLE K
Hello, travelers!
This is Binako, your Sarukuma writer with a soft spot for desserts that take the pressure off dinner duties.
Today’s spotlight is on a delightful little patisserie tucked away in Obiyama, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City —
a brand-new cake shop that opened its doors on March 5,
“DOBLE K.”
The owner and head pâtissier, Kanako, has built up an impressive resume in the world of fine pastry:
• Gold Medal, Confectionery Division, 45th National Skills Olympics (2008)
• Silver Medal, 13th Utsumi Cup Junior Technical Competition (2009)
• World Finalist, Valrhona C3 World Chocolate Competition (2018)
In other words, you’re in the hands of a truly world-class pâtissier.

The shop’s name has a lovely backstory. “Doble” is the Spanish word for “double,” and the “K” stands for both Kumamoto and the owner’s name, Kanako — a sweet double initial baked right into the brand.
Parking is available right in front of the shop, so driving over is a breeze.
Another standout feature: DOBLE K opens at 9:00 AM, which is unusually early for a patisserie in Japan. That makes it perfect for a relaxed morning stop or grabbing a sweet souvenir before a day of sightseeing.

Step inside and you’re greeted by rows of beautifully arranged baked goods and the warm smiles of the staff — instantly soothing after a busy morning.
There’s also a generous selection of chocolates — perfect as gifts for friends back home or as a well-earned treat for yourself.

A whole wall of the shop is lined with vibrant, beautifully packaged jams in a rainbow of colors.
The display case is a jewel box of stunning cakes. What makes DOBLE K extra special is its commitment to locally sourced Kumamoto ingredients — there’s a real sense of place in every bite.
With so many flavors and shapes to admire, you could happily linger at the case for ages.
Plenty of pieces would make wonderful gifts to bring along when visiting friends. Personally, my eye was drawn to the Carrot Cake (1,500 yen) on the right.
DOBLE K’s Must-Try Picks

This time, I went home with three beauties:
Calamansi & Kumamoto Lemon Tart (430 yen)
Fruit Tart (470 yen)
Creamy Cheesecake (430 yen)
I was also impressed by the thoughtful packaging — each cake is easy to lift out cleanly, and even the box itself opens nicely. Little touches like that really matter.
Just looking at them is pure happiness…
First up: the Calamansi & Kumamoto Lemon Tart.
This is a beautifully refreshing tart built on a double-citrus duo of calamansi and lemon. It looks petite but feels surprisingly substantial in the hand.
The cream is light and never overly sweet, with just a whisper of tang. Inside, the filling melts on your tongue and bursts with bold citrus flavor — a wonderful pick for anyone who prefers desserts on the lighter, fresher side.
Next, the strawberry-laden Fruit Tart. The lineup at DOBLE K rotates daily, so you can pop in every day and discover something new each time.
Crisp, buttery tart shell, beautifully set custard, and juicy fresh strawberries — every bite is bright and balanced. You won’t get tired of it, no matter how many times you go back for more.
And of course, no cheesecake fan could walk past the Creamy Cheesecake.
One gentle press of the fork and it slides through like a dream — truly living up to the name “Creamy.”
If you love cheese or cheesecake, you absolutely have to try this one. It’s the kind of bite that makes your eyes go wide.
The sweetness is gentle and well-balanced, with a luxuriously creamy depth that melts on the tongue.
The base is wonderfully crisp with a soft, mellow sweetness — it genuinely moved me.
Beyond the cakes I tried this time, DOBLE K is also known for its expertise with chocolate, so chocolate is firmly on my list for the next visit.
