Welcome to Cafe Lilien

Hello, travelers! It’s Kurumikko, your Sarukuma writer!

Today I’m excited to introduce you to
a charming little spot in Suya, Koshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture:
“Cafe Lilien & Baramusubi Onigiri Buffet”
This lovely cafe opened last April and sits quietly tucked away on a small lane just off the main road.

Surrounded by neighborhood houses, you might walk right past thinking it’s just another home…
but yes, it really is a cafe! โ˜•

When they’re open, you’ll see an “Open for Business” sign hanging out front!

There’s parking for about 2 cars right in front of the shop.

I visited in early January, so traditional New Year decorations were on display โ€” a wonderful glimpse of Japanese seasonal culture.

What kind of space awaits beyond the door? With a flutter of excitement, I stepped under the noren curtain.
A friendly staff member greeted me with a warm smile.
The space radiates warmth with its natural wood interior โ€” absolutely lovely โœจ

Sunlight streams gently through the handcrafted stained-glass-style windows, creating a beautifully calming atmosphere.

It feels like a true hidden retreat โ€” I was instantly charmed!

Fun fact: the cafe’s name “Lilien” (้‡Œๅบต) comes from the French word “Lilien.”

And about that intriguing name “Baramusubi Onigiri Buffet” (ๅฉ†ๆฅฝๅคขๅฏฟ็พŽ) โ€”
those mysterious-looking kanji characters are read as “Baramusubi” (a playful spelling of “bara musubi,” meaning rice balls).

Both names are wonderfully creative and full of personality!

ใ€ŠToday’s Lunch Menuใ€‹
A full lunch lineup for just 500 yen โ€” incredible value! ๐ŸŒŸ
As tempting as the lunch looked, I decided to take out some of the famous Baramusubi onigiri this time. ๐Ÿ™
(Next time, the lunch set is definitely happening!!)

I ordered the salmon and pickled plum onigiri โ€” and the staff hand-shaped them right in front of me!
(Bonito flakes were sold out that day.)
Piping-hot, freshly made onigiri
You can really feel the love in every handcrafted rice ball.

First up, the umeboshi (pickled plum) onigiri:
Take one bite and the rich aroma of nori (seaweed) fills your senses!
Inside, fragrant shiso leaf balances the plum perfectly โ€” not too tart, just wonderfully refreshing.

And that perfectly salted rice is absolutely delicious!!

Here’s why โ€” the rice used is “Kae no Kome” from Shichijo, Kumamoto Prefecture,
an award-winning rice variety celebrated at competitions!

Next, the salmon onigiri ๐Ÿ™
It tastes just like the onigiri your Japanese mom would make โ€”
comforting, nostalgic, and deeply satisfying.

Generously stuffed with salmon, every bite is wonderfully filling!

Each grain of rice glistens beautifully and stands up firm on its own.
There’s something about onigiri eaten by hand โ€” it just tastes better than rice from a bowl, doesn’t it?

Watching the staff hand-shape each one with care
made every bite feel warm and heartfelt. A truly comforting onigiri experience!

Gochisosama deshita โ€” thank you for the delicious meal!
