Introducing the Restaurant

Hello, fellow travelers!

I’m Binako, a writer for Sarukuma,
and lately I’ve been binge-watching every new Korean drama I can get my hands on!

Today I’m taking you to a hidden gem located in
Hachioji-machi, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture:
“Yeong Yeong Family” (よんよん家族).

This wonderful spot serves authentic Korean home cooking made by a Korean “Omma” — that’s the Korean word for “mom,” and it perfectly captures the warm, comforting vibe here!

I’ve been wanting to visit forever, so my heart was racing with excitement when I finally made it through the door!

Parking is located behind the restaurant.
Look for the shipping container — that’s where your parking area starts!

There’s also a gravel parking lot in the back.
The parking zone is marked by a yellow-and-black rope
(in the area labeled “ココ” / “Here”).

The restaurant was bustling, so I couldn’t grab a wide shot of the interior, but inside you’ll find 6 tatami-style table seats and a counter.

Here’s a peek at the menu!

Recommended Menu

There was only one thing I had to order — and luckily, it was still available!
The Yeong Yeong Set Meal — 500 yen

First, I have to share something important.

This little side dish (I’m not sure of its exact name) is
absolutely incredible!
I honestly wish they sold it for takeout!

The sweet-and-spicy seasoning soaks in beautifully and bursts with umami in every bite.

And this pumpkin — it’s totally different from the kind I usually eat. It’s lighter, refreshing, and beautifully fluffy.

Then there’s the kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi).
This one tastes truly authentic — so delicious!

And this dish has rice cakes (tteok) inside, with just the right balance of spice and savory umami — it slides down so easily you barely notice you’ve finished it.

It’s loaded with hearty ingredients and lots of vegetables — what’s not to love?

And the soup is simply irresistible!

The rice is wonderful on its own, but my favorite way to enjoy it is to plop it right into the soup — trust me on this one.

It practically drinks itself down — you’ll be going back for more before you know it!

For a portion this generous, isn’t 500 yen unbelievable value?

Be sure to stop by and try it for yourself when you’re in Kumamoto!
