2020.12.17

A Sarukuma writer’s firsthand visit to Okada Coffee, a charming cafe and patisserie in Kamitori-machi, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City. Price range: from 880 yen. Includes family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours.
About the Shop
Hello, travelers!
It’s Binako, your Sarukuma writer, here today—even though my toes are freezing inside the house (how is that even possible?!).
Today I’m taking you to Okada Coffee, a delightful little gem tucked away in Kamitori-machi, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City—right in the heart of Kumamoto’s lively shopping arcade.

Okada Coffee has a wonderful two-story setup:
The first floor is a takeaway shop filled with beautiful cakes and baked sweets, while the second floor is a cozy cafe space where you can sit down and enjoy a slice with coffee.
This time, I headed upstairs for a proper cake-and-coffee moment. ♪
The anticipation builds with every step up the staircase.
Inside, you’ll find both table seating and counter seats, making it easy to drop in even if you’re traveling solo.
And those cakes lined up on the counter…
each one a little work of art!
Recommended Menu

The menu also features herbal teas and savory food options, so it’s a perfect spot for a relaxed lunch too.
And the fact that every cake set comes with a drink? A truly thoughtful touch.

Here’s the lineup:
Cake Set: 880–950 yen
Other tempting options include:
Riheiguri Chestnut Marron Pie Set: 1,180 yen
Apple Pie Set: 950 yen
This time, I went with the
Strawberry Tart Set: 950 yen.
And just look at the coffee cup—the Okada Coffee logo printed on it is so beautifully classic.
Piled high with juicy strawberries and topped with a generous dollop of fresh whipped cream—this tart is a strawberry lover’s dream come true.
Here’s the real surprise: the tart shell itself is infused with strawberry, so the bright tang of the fresh berries blends with the gentle sweetness baked right into the crust. Light, refreshing, and absolutely delicious.
And here’s the Mont Blanc Tart.
It’s so adorably shaped, you might hesitate before taking that first bite!
It features a crisp biscuit base layered with airy meringue, all crowned with classic Mont Blanc cream.
The sweetness is wonderfully balanced—gentle and comforting—with that unmistakable Japanese chestnut flavor shining through.
Okada Coffee has such a calming, welcoming atmosphere. Every cake I tried was wonderful, and I’m already planning my next visit.
