A SaruKuma writer’s firsthand visit to “Patisserie Retory” in Toshima, Higashi Ward, Kumamoto City. Includes family-friendly tips, access details, and opening hours.

Hello, travelers!
This is Rikotama, writer for SaruKuma!

Today I’m excited to introduce you to a delightful sweet shop located in Toshima, Higashi Ward, Kumamoto City:
Patisserie Retory.

You’ll find this lovely patisserie inside Line Garden, right next door to the Bubutan Natural Hot Spring—making it an ideal stop for combining a relaxing onsen experience with a sweet treat!

What makes this shop extra special? It’s the very first patisserie venture from the Otsuka Group, a local company that also runs yakiniku restaurants, dairy farms, and hotels in the region.

The shop opened its doors in 2016 and has been a beloved local favorite ever since.

Opening hours: 9:30 AM – 6:30 PM

You’ll find a tempting selection of financiers, madeleines, and other classic French baked goods on display.

Since they’re sold individually, they’re perfect for a quick afternoon snack or to take back to your hotel.

They even have homemade ice pops—a refreshing treat on a hot Kumamoto day!

Juicy Strawberry Milk

Golden Pineapple ALL ¥150

If you’re visiting around the holidays, they also take Christmas cake reservations! 🎄

Recommended Menu Items

Now let’s take a look at the cakes!

“So Good It’ll Make You Smile!” Half-Baked Cheesecake — ¥1,580

The name alone makes you curious, doesn’t it?

Candied Chestnut Mont Blanc — ¥430

Half-Baked Cheesecake Cup — ¥320

Jersey Milk Pudding — ¥210

Fresh Chocolate Roll Cake — ¥1,080

Jersey Milk Roll Cake — ¥960

Choux ROCK — ¥160

Old-Fashioned Apple Pie — ¥320

Honestly, everything looks irresistible!
I had a hard time choosing while taking photos.

There’s also a seasonal limited-edition Shine Muscat Roll — ¥1,890!

This time, I went with the Candied Chestnut Mont Blanc — ¥430.

I started with the chocolate piece shaped like a ginkgo leaf on top.
It was surprisingly bitter—a sophisticated grown-up flavor (though my son quickly snatched it from me!).

Then came the chestnuts, glistening like little jewels!

Not too sweet, with a refreshingly clean taste.

The Mont Blanc cream is silky smooth and wonderfully rich!

The combination with the chocolate and chestnut is simply perfect.

Next up, the Jersey Milk Pudding — ¥210.

The moment my spoon touched it, I knew!

So incredibly soft!

The richness of the egg and gentle sweetness spread softly through your mouth.

You can taste hints of real vanilla bean—pure happiness in every bite!
It practically melts away on your tongue.

Before you know it, the spoon just keeps going back for more.

My son and I polished it off in no time!

From now on, it’s Bubutan Hot Spring followed by a stop at Patisserie Retory!

The perfect combo!
