📌 What You’ll Find in This Article
A Sarukuma writer’s firsthand report on “Tekone Hamburg Nikumaru,” a beloved hamburg steak restaurant in Musashigaoka, Kikuyo Town. Prices start from 400 yen, and we cover family-friendly features, access, and opening hours.

Hello, travelers!
This is Nanako, your Sarukuma writer.

My friends like to say, “When it comes to meat, ask Nanako!”
So today I’m sharing my go-to spot whenever I’m craving a really great hamburg steak.

Allow me to introduce you to Musashigaoka, Kikuyo Town, Kikuchi District, Kumamoto Prefecture, home to “Tekone Hamburg Nikumaru” — a name that translates roughly to “Hand-Kneaded Hamburg, All About the Meat.”

Just hearing the name is enough to make your stomach rumble.

You’ll find the restaurant inside Niji-no-Mori Plaza in Kikuyo Town.

There’s plenty of parking too.

The moment you step inside, you’ll notice how stylish everything is.

A chic sofa and cushions greet you right at the entrance.

Between the entrance and the register, you’ll also find a charming selection of homewares for sale.

From retro animal figurines…

…to incredibly realistic-looking faux fruit.

This time my son begged me for an apple, and even though he couldn’t actually eat it, he was absolutely thrilled with his new “treasure.”

There are also stylish wooden plates and cutlery on display.

This gorgeous acacia wood plate, for example, is just 400 yen.
It’s hard to resist!

After resisting all those temptations, we made our way to our seats.

The dining area is mainly table seating, with options for groups of four or six.

The space used to be a café, so the lighting, tables, and chairs all have a wonderfully refined feel.

There’s also counter seating, which is just as picture-perfect.
You’ll be excited before you’ve even ordered!

For all its style, the restaurant has plenty of space between tables, so strollers can move around with ease.

They also offer high chairs for kids,

as well as children’s tableware.

With a kids’ menu available too, this is a perfect spot for a family lunch or dinner.

Fun detail: the white plate behind the paper apron is heart-shaped. Stylish down to the smallest details!

And here’s the kicker — set meals come with free rice refills!

And it’s locally grown Kumamoto rice at that!

Big eaters and growing kids will be in heaven!

This is the à la carte menu.

If you order a meal, soft drinks are available for just 200 yen.

And here’s another delightful surprise — Nikumaru has a special date-themed deal.

Ta-da!!!

Because the 29th of every month is “Nikumaru Day” (a play on the Japanese word for meat, “niku,” pronounced like “two-nine”),
all set meals are 200 yen off!

That means you can enjoy a full set for the price of an à la carte item — what a deal!

So, here’s what we ordered.
First up, the Kids’ Hamburg for my son.

Even though it’s a “kids'” portion, that hamburg steak is huge!

It’s about half the size of an adult portion, served with French fries and karaage fried chicken.

How could any kid not love this?

My son’s eyes lit up, and he happily devoured the whole thing.

This is the Chicken Nanban Hamburg my husband ordered.

The portion is enormous!

Both the hamburg steak and the chicken nanban (a Kyushu specialty of fried chicken with sweet vinegar sauce and tartar) are big enough to be the main dish on their own.

The hamburg is hearty yet tender, light, and incredibly juicy.

And it pairs perfectly with the sauce.

Honestly — this is one of the best hamburg steaks I’ve ever had.

The secret? They use shio koji (fermented rice malt seasoning) and knead the meat by hand to achieve that signature tenderness and juiciness.

Tekone (hand-kneading) really does make a difference. We were blown away.

The chicken nanban is crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and remarkably non-greasy for a fried dish — absolutely delicious.

And here’s what I ordered — the Fried Shrimp Hamburg.

Another generous portion!

A massive hamburg steak paired with two big fried shrimp. I was beyond excited.

Every Nikumaru hamburg set is served on a hot skillet, so your meal stays warm even as you take your time.

That means even when you’re eating slowly with kids, your food doesn’t go colda real lifesaver for parents that’s hard to recreate at home.

The fried shrimp had a perfectly crispy coating with plump, springy shrimp inside — incredibly tasty.

It was so good that, after polishing off his own plate, my son swiped one of mine!

How much can one little kid eat…?

Another highlight at Nikumaru is the hamburg sauces.

You can enjoy your hamburg with five different sauces: Japanese-Style Onion, Japanese-Style Grated Daikon, Burnt Garlic, Horseradish, and Demi-Glace!

And every single one pairs beautifully with the hamburg — it’s hard to choose a favorite!

For the record, my pick is the horseradish, while my husband swears by the burnt garlic.
Make sure to try them all when you visit.

That wraps up today’s introduction to one of my all-time favorite restaurants,

“Tekone Hamburg Nikumaru”
