📌 What You’ll Learn in This Article
A Sarukuma writer’s firsthand report from Ono Sensui Park, located in Ono, Ueki-machi, Kita Ward, Kumamoto City. We cover family-friendly highlights, access info, and opening hours.

Hi there, fellow travelers! I’m Asukarando, writing for Sarukuma.

Today I’m taking you to a hidden gem in
Ono, Ueki-machi, Kita Ward, Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture:
“Ono Sensui Park”.

A Park Rich in History
This tranquil green space is said to be connected to Ono no Komachi, one of the most celebrated poetesses of Japan’s Heian era.
Surrounded by seasonal plants and trees, it’s a charming, unpretentious park where you can truly feel the rhythm of all four seasons.

Parking is right here.

Restrooms can be found near the center of the park (Western-style toilets).

A hand-washing station is also located near the center of the park, next to the playground.

There’s another one on the opposite side, near the lawn area.

Toward the back of the park lies a beautiful spring-fed pond, where countless koi (carp) swim gracefully.
Fish food is sold on-site, so you can have fun feeding the koi yourself.

A gentle stream has been designed to flow through the heart of the park.

Since the water runs only ankle-deep,
even small children can splash around safely (^^)

There’s also a covered rest area to escape the sun.
Plus, plenty of natural shade under the trees (^^)

Fireflies live here, so you’ll see signs asking visitors not to collect kawanina (a small freshwater snail), which serves as essential food for firefly larvae.

Vending machines are conveniently located just before you enter the park.

The shop you can spot in the distance isn’t open every day,
but it’s where you can buy food for the koi.

Why You’ll Love This Park

The shallow stream is perfect for catching crabs and donko (a small freshwater fish)—a delightful nature activity for kids.
Because the water is so shallow, even toddlers can play here safely.

Playground equipment is right over here (^-^)/

You’ll find classic favorites like slides, swings, and a jungle gym.

On the opposite side from the playground, there’s a gentle grassy slope—a popular spot where you’ll often see families spreading out picnic mats for a relaxing picnic.

Deeper into the park, a striking vermilion structure stands out vividly against the surrounding greenery.

A quiet Shinto shrine sits within the park grounds—it has such a wonderful, serene atmosphere (^^)

The park gets its name from its connection to Ono no Komachi, one of the legendary poetesses of the Heian period.

In spring, the cherry blossoms (sakura) are simply gorgeous, and once they’ve finished blooming, lush fresh greenery takes their place.
In summer, you can witness the magical glow of fireflies—making this a park to enjoy by both day and night.
