Toriibara Park: A Family-Friendly Spot with a Children’s Center Nearby and a Bimonthly Marche! (Nishikigaoka, Higashi-ku, Kumamoto City)

Outing Spots

2020.10.09

Hello, fellow travelers!
This is Rikotama, writer for Sarukuma!

Today I’m excited to introduce you to a wonderful local hidden gem located in Nishikigaoka, Higashi-ku, Kumamoto City:
Toriibara Park.

You’ll find this park tucked right behind the Kumamoto East Post Office!

The Eastern Children’s Center and library are also just a short walk away, which is why my son and I drop by here all the time!

Here’s the restroom! Heads up — it’s traditional Japanese-style (squat toilet) only.

And there’s one drinking fountain in the park, right here!

There’s a charming covered rest area with adorable round benches — perfect for catching your breath in the shade!

For playground equipment, kids can enjoy a slide,

swings,

and a seesaw!

Everything looks well-maintained and fairly new — a nice touch (*^▽^*)

There’s also a sandbox!

In the mornings, the play area is shaded by trees — a real lifesaver for parents on warm days!

What Makes Toriibara Park Special

Toriibara Park is dotted with cherry blossom trees,

and in spring it transforms into a popular hanami (cherry blossom viewing) spot bustling with happy visitors!

Here’s an extra-special treat:
on the third Saturday of every even-numbered month, the park hosts a delightful local marche called “Yotsukado Market” (Four Corners Market)!

You’ll find handmade crafts, takeout gourmet treats, a toy swap exchange, and kids’ workshops. In winter, there’s even a fun event called “Oshikura Manjuu” (a traditional Japanese kids’ game where everyone huddles and pushes together to stay warm)!

Plenty of fun activities are held throughout the year!

↑ I made this snow globe at the December Yotsukado Market — such a fun keepsake!

The friendly staff guide you step by step,
so even preschoolers can easily make one!

It’s the perfect time of year to enjoy the great outdoors!

If you’re visiting Kumamoto with kids — or simply want to experience an authentic local park — definitely give Toriibara Park a try (≧▽≦)
