Hello, fellow travelers!
This is Binako, your Sarukuma writer!
Today, I’m excited to introduce you to a hidden gem in Hikimizu, Ozu Town, Kikuchi District, Kumamoto Prefecture:
“Genkido”—a delightful bakery that’s a must-visit for anyone exploring the Kumamoto countryside.

What makes this bakery truly special is that they primarily craft their breads using “genmai” (brown rice)—
a nutritious twist on traditional Japanese baking that health-conscious foodies will absolutely love! ♪

Good news for drivers: there are 3 parking spots out front, plus a larger parking area behind the building ( *´艸`)

You’ll find Genkido near the entrance to Milk Road—the famous scenic drive in the Aso area.
Just look for the big eye-catching signboard!

Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by an impressive variety of brown rice breads!
The first beauty pictured here is the
Brown Rice Pizza — 220 yen

Next up, we have
Chocolate Danish
Muffins
Brown rice can really transform into anything…!

Fluffy Brown Rice Carrot Bread — 180 yen
Brown Rice Anpan (sweet red bean bun) — 180 yen
Brown Rice Cream Bun — 180 yen
And there’s even a brown rice Anpanman (a beloved Japanese cartoon character bun)!
It’s wonderful that kids can enjoy something delicious while also getting healthy nutrition ( *´艸`)

Brown Rice Piroshki — 180 yen
Brown Rice Curry Bread — 180 yen
With so many varieties, choosing becomes a wonderfully delicious dilemma! lol

Brown Rice Loaf “Yutaka” — 390 yen

They also offer plenty of sandwiches! ♪

And here is the No.1 best-seller:
Premium Brown Rice Loaf “Gokujo” — 450 yen
The name alone hints at how exquisite this bread must be…
Each loaf is even branded with the kanji character 【玄】 (gen, meaning “brown”).

And here’s something that made me smile—a half-price bread corner! (´;ω;`)
The right corner offers items at half price, while the
left corner has everything for just 100 yen.
Brown rice bread at half price…
This alone is worth a special trip!

The shop also features several cozy eat-in corners! ^^

And here’s another delightful surprise:
a microwave is available so you can warm up your purchased bread on the spot.
Plus, complimentary coffee is included!
Honestly, your feet will naturally lead you to the eat-in area.

The restroom is a multi-purpose facility, making it comfortable
for families with young children and senior visitors alike. ^^
Recommended Menu Items

This time, I picked up:
Brown Rice Choco Cornet — 180 yen
Brown Rice Walnut Bread — 100 yen
Brown Rice Bread — 100 yen
I just couldn’t resist the 100-yen corner—
that’s the savvy shopper instinct kicking in!

First up, the Choco Cornet—a classic spiral-shaped pastry filled with chocolate cream.
This is basically a non-negotiable purchase, isn’t it?
As always, it disappeared into my child’s stomach in seconds.

Loaded with rich chocolate!
I was a bit curious how my child would react to the brown rice base,
but they happily polished it off with delight.

Next, the simple Brown Rice Bread.
It’s a plain bread, but oh-so-tasty.
I was so absorbed in eating that I completely forgot to take a photo—my bad!
The dough was wonderfully chewy and mochi-like!
Who knew brown rice bread could be this delightfully chewy?!
The nutty, toasty aroma was simply irresistible ( *´艸`)

Brown Rice Walnut Bread
I’ve always thought brown rice and walnuts make a dream team.
I love walnut bread in general,
but this one was on a whole different level!
The crunchy, generous walnut chunks paired beautifully
with the chewy, mochi-like brown rice dough.
It’s seriously satisfying and worth every bite!
Healthy, affordable, and packed with thoughtful service—
that’s Genkido!
Be sure to stop by during your travels in Kumamoto—you won’t regret it!
