A Sarukuma writer visits Yotsuba Shokudo, a beloved Chinese restaurant tucked away in Fukuro-machi, Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto. Price range: from 655 yen. We also cover family-friendly tips, access, and opening hours.

Hello, travelers!
I’m Ayu-mama, a writer for Sarukuma.

Today I’m excited to introduce you to a charming little spot in Fukuro-machi, Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture:
Yotsuba Shokudo.
When I was searching for somewhere to grab lunch in Yatsushiro, this place was the very first result that popped up โ€” so naturally, I had to go check it out!
At first glance, it looks just like a regular old house โ€” but look closely and you’ll spot the sign! It’s a beautifully renovated traditional Japanese kominka (old folk house). There’s parking for about 6 cars right next to the restaurant.
Traditional red lanterns greet you at the entrance!

As you’d expect from the top search result, this place is incredibly popular!
Even though I arrived shortly after opening, the restaurant was already completely full.

Thankfully, there are several chairs near the entrance where you can wait your turn.
The seats are spaced apart nicely, so you can wait comfortably with proper social distancing.
Inside, there are table seats,
counter seats,
and a traditional tatami zashiki area.
The tatami room even has child-sized chairs available โ€” perfect for families!
The atmosphere inside is calm and relaxing, and adorable little decorations are tucked into every corner.

Every detail is just so charming!

Here’s the menu!

They serve tantanmen (spicy sesame noodles),
mapo tofu, chicken nanban,
seasonal summer specials,
and a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks.
Even the chopsticks and renge spoons arrive in stylish little containers!
The complimentary water comes infused with lemon โ€” refreshing and a perfect match for the meal!

Recommended Menu Items

This time, I ordered the most popular tantanmen, along with the shio (salt) ramen set!
Here’s the Tantanmen for 655 yen (721 yen incl. tax)

The spice level was just right, and the aroma of the spices โ€” especially star anise โ€” really stood out. So delicious!
The chili oil is even homemade, which explains the incredible flavor!
The noodles are thin and straight,
perfectly catching every drop of that flavorful soup!
The broth was so good I nearly drank every last drop.
And here’s the Shio Ramen Set for 855 yen (941 yen incl. tax)
It comes with an onigiri rice ball, karaage (Japanese fried chicken), and salad โ€” talk about a hearty meal!

This set is perfect for sharing with kids!

In the evenings, they also offer course meals with all-you-can-drink options!
Chinese food and beer? An absolute match made in heaven!

This place sees a steady stream of happy customers!
You’ll spot plenty of solo male diners too โ€” once you taste it, you’ll be hooked for life!

Trust me, it’s absolutely worth the wait!!!
