Hello, fellow travelers!
[SaruKuma] writer Cho-san here!

Today I’m excited to introduce
[Kaze Kaoru Pasta],
located in Nishihara Village, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture.
The name itself — meaning “pasta carried on a fragrant breeze” — is one you won’t easily forget…♪
And trust me, it’s not just the name that’s stylish here.
Stick around to find out why!

Heading from central Kumamoto City along Prefectural Route 208 toward Nishihara Village,
you’ll spot the restaurant on your right.
It occupies the ground floor of a four-story apartment building.
There’s a spacious parking lot, but it was completely full thanks to the steady stream of customers.

Near the entrance, a charming chalkboard greets you.
It gives a great preview of the most popular menu items!

I visited around noon on a Sunday
and was seated within about 10 minutes.
The first thing that surprised me upon walking in was
just how many families with young children were dining there.
More than half the guests had kids in tow.

Looking back, I think the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere
(plus the fact that it was a Sunday)
makes this a comfortable spot for families with little ones,
which likely explains the loyal repeat customers!

Seating includes tables for two and tables for four,
plus counter seats near the open kitchen.

Multiple kids’ chairs are available,
making this a worry-free choice for parents traveling with children
The kids’ menu is impressively varied
and looks absolutely delicious!

You can choose pasta or baguette for the
Kids’ Plate — 500 yen
Kids’ Pizza — 350 yen
Kids’ French Fries — 150 yen
Kids’ Vanilla Ice Cream — 100 yen
The wallet-friendly prices are a real plus for families ☆

Recommended Menu Picks

The lunch menu is selected from this list.
Since I went on a Sunday,
the weekday-only
Daily Pasta Lunch (850 yen) wasn’t available,
but it seems to be a huge hit among regulars!
Instead, I went for the
Kaze Kaoru Pasta Lunch — 1,230 yen.
You get to choose your pasta, and the variety is
absolutely incredible!
Tomato sauce,
basil sauce,
carbonara,
meat sauce,
peperoncino,
cream sauce,
Japanese-style sauce…
and each of those comes in several variations!
It’s almost overwhelming, but choosing among so many options was honestly half the fun! (laughs)

You can also pick your favorite baguette flavor!
Honey,
mentaiko (spicy cod roe),
garlic,
creamery butter,
seasonal special baguette
— pick one from the lineup.
The seasonal special during my visit was
mushroom and cream cheese.”
First came the salad.
Next, the baguette!
What a sight — its size has serious wow factor!
Large, yes, but still very easy to eat ☆
I chose creamery butter as my flavor.
The perfectly balanced saltiness of the butter was simply delicious ♬

By the way, the front one is creamery butter,
and the one in the back is mushroom and cream cheese.

And then — drumroll — the main pasta arrives!

From the carbonara options I picked the
Rich Carbonara with Scallops and Spinach!
As soon as the pasta arrives,
the staff grates fresh cheese right in front of you,
and here’s the amazing part —
they just keep going
until you say “Stop!”
What an incredible system!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

The greedy side of me wanting MORE cheese versus
the polite side worried about looking too eager
An internal battle ensued…
(though I’m pretty sure the greedy side clearly won)
and when I finally said “Stop!” to the staff, the result was…
THIS much cheese!! (laughs)

The scallops, which should have been the star of the show,
were partially buried under all that cheese (laughs)

With all that extra cheese, the dish was wonderfully indulgent ♡
And above all, this is a restaurant that takes pride in its handmade fresh pasta,
so the noodles were incredibly chewy and genuinely delicious!!
Pure bliss!!

And here’s another favorite —
from the basil sauce selection,
Plump Seafood Basil Pasta.
The basil sauce options are extremely popular,
and I noticed many guests ordering them ☆

One more little side note —
Did you notice how lovely the pasta plates are?
They’re actually Noritake dinnerware,
a renowned Japanese porcelain brand! ☆☆☆

I’m no expert at all,
just someone who simply adores beautiful tableware,
but a gorgeous plate really elevates the entire dining experience ♪
Though this was a very reasonably priced lunch,
learning the plates were Noritake earned bonus points on top of an already perfect score ♪ (laughs)

By the time I’d happily finished everything,
the set drink (iced coffee) arrived…
but I forgot to take a photo… again…
(I’ve now repeated this same blunder more than five times…)
But I clearly remember it was a wonderful coffee!

Beyond lunch, the dinner courses look elegant and inviting too ♪
Courses are available at 2,500 yen and 3,500 yen,
and they even accept requests for birthday surprises and special occasions.
If you’re hunting for a venue to celebrate an anniversary or memorable moment,
why not give Kaze Kaoru Pasta a try?
