2020.07.24

A SaruKuma writer’s first-hand visit to “Me no Okashiyasan,” a charming tart and baked sweets shop in Kasuga, Nishi-ku, Kumamoto City. Prices start from just 150 yen. We also cover family-friendly tips, access, and opening hours.
Hello, travelers!
This is Saa-Mama, a writer for SaruKuma.
Today I’m excited to introduce you to a hidden gem located in
Kasuga, Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture —
“Me no Okashiyasan” (めのおかし家さん).

This is a specialty shop dedicated to handcrafted tarts and baked sweets —
run entirely by one passionate baker who handles everything from production to sales.

The shop is tucked into a residential neighborhood,
with parking space for 2–3 cars right out front — convenient for visitors driving in.

The shop has a warm, woody charm that feels instantly welcoming.
I arrived about 20 minutes before opening, and there were already four groups of customers waiting in line —
and the line kept growing before the doors even opened!
Recommended Menu Items

Stepping inside, you’re greeted by what feels like
a jewelry box brimming with adorable, mouth-watering tarts —
an irresistible space that makes you want to try every single one!

The Peach Pie Tart is so popular that it’s limited to one per customer.
Luckily, I managed to grab the very last one!

There are also smaller-sized Mini Tarts (¥150 + tax) and
Jellies (¥250 + tax) — perfect for sampling several flavors.

You’ll also find baked Cookies (¥150 + tax),

and Tuiles (¥180 + tax) — a delicate French baked treat similar to financiers, as the owner explained.
With such a wide variety of baked sweets, you’ll want to try them all!

These make wonderful gifts or after-school treats for kids!

This time, I picked up a Chocolate Tart (¥390 + tax), a Pistachio & Strawberry Tart (¥400 + tax),
a Cheese Tart (¥390 + tax), a Fruit Tart (¥390 + tax), and the coveted Peach Pie Tart (¥480 + tax)!

The Pistachio & Strawberry Tart is loaded with rich pistachio cream —
even the tart shell is a vibrant pistachio green, an absolute dream for pistachio lovers!
The Peach Pie Tart is packed with creamy custard and juicy peach,
with just the right level of sweetness and a beautifully flaky crust.
My child happily devoured every last bite, declaring it “so delicious!”
Every tart here is a true gem — satisfying both the heart and the appetite!
The baker takes great care with each individual tart,
so you really can’t go wrong no matter which one you choose.
Opening hours are 11:00 to 19:00, but it’s no surprise the shop often closes early once everything sells out!
