📌 What You’ll Learn in This Article
Our Sarukuma writer visited Okoshiki Coast (Okoshiki Kaigan) in person to bring you this report. We’ve also rounded up family-friendly tips, access details, and visiting hours.

Today we’re heading to Okoshiki Coast (Okoshiki Kaigan),
located in Toguchi, Uto City, Kumamoto Prefecture — one of Kyushu’s most magical seascapes.

For just a handful of days each year,
the setting sun aligns perfectly with the dreamlike, rippled tidal flats
to create what locals call a truly miraculous view.

Sadly, those special days for 2017
have already passed,
so we’ll have to wait until next year!
You can find the exact “miracle days” on the
Uto City Tourism Association website,
which publishes the optimal sunset-and-tide schedule.

The photos above show a regular evening at the coast — but as you can see, even an ordinary sunset here is breathtaking.

Access

The approach road is narrow, but there are plenty of signs along the way to guide you in!

This is the perfect detour for a sunset drive,
so we highly recommend pairing it with a road trip toward Amakusa or around the Uto area — it’s a lovely date or family outing.
