📌 What You’ll Learn in This Article
A SaruKuma writer pays a personal visit to “Maguro-sho Toroya” in Kumamoto and shares the full report — including family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours.

Today we’re heading to
“Maguro-sho Toroya,” a beloved tuna specialty restaurant
tucked away in Tomiai-machi, Minami Ward of Kumamoto City.

A friend who lives in the Tomiai area
raved about this place as her absolute top pick — so of course, we had to go check it out!

The interior is surprisingly spacious, with a mix of counter seating and tables.
It’s conveniently located along Route 3, right near Nishi-Kumamoto Hospital, so it’s easy to find.
Despite being a weekday, the restaurant was packed — and we learned that on busier days, the tuna can completely sell out during lunch service!

If you want to try the limited specials,
we highly recommend arriving right at opening time!

Recommended Menu

The standard set meals come with your choice of 3, 5, or 7 pieces of tuna cutlet (maguro katsu).
Both the set meals and rice bowls include one free rice refill,
so this place is a dream come true for hungry travelers who love a hearty meal!
The one pictured here is the 5-piece set!

The summer-only oroshi ponzu set (with grated daikon radish and citrus soy sauce) is incredibly refreshing — perfect for hot Kumamoto afternoons!

Personally, I’d love to see a 4-piece option added to the menu —
the 5-piece set was seriously filling!

How to Get There

Coming from central Kumamoto City and heading south,
the restaurant will be on your left-hand side.
Keep an eye out for the taiyaki shop nearby — that’s your landmark!
