Introducing Kashiho Kazusaya × Pan Kobo kazusaya

Hello travelers! It’s Aikero, your friendly writer from Sarukuma.

Today I’m thrilled to take you to a hidden gem in Kawashiri, Minami Ward, Kumamoto City
【Kashiho Kazusaya × Pan Kobo kazusaya】, a charming shop where traditional Japanese sweets (wagashi) and freshly baked bread come together under one roof.
Our colleague Yuzu introduced this shop on Sarukuma before, but they’ve just released an exciting new bread, so I had to head back and try it (^^)/Coming from the old Kawashiri road, look for the sign pointing toward Kawashiri Kuramae Street and turn there.
The roughly 1 km stretch leading up to Kazusaya was officially named “Kawashiri Kuramae Street” last year through a public naming contest.
There’s parking for 4 cars right in front of the shop — super convenient.
Step inside, and you’re greeted by a beautifully traditional Japanese-style interior. Bread takes center stage in the middle of the shop, while wagashi (Japanese sweets) line the right side.
You’ll find fresh wagashi like ichigo daifuku (strawberry-filled rice cakes) and kintsuba (sweet bean cakes)alongside dorayaki (red-bean pancake sandwiches) and chocolate manju.
Cookies are also on offer.
They weren’t on display this day, but the shop also makes adorable icing cookies (^○^)

The shokupan (Japanese milk bread) and round loaves come in several varieties.
Curry bread, hard-crust breads, and savory filled buns sit over here.
And there’s a wonderful selection of pastries and salt rolls too! ♪
Sweet breads and kid-favorite fried doughnuts round out the lineup. And of course, you can’t miss the wagashi shop’s signature anpan (sweet red-bean buns) lineup!
And here’s the star of the show — the brand-new Kawashiri Daifuku Bread! 290 yen (excl. tax) / 313 yen (incl. tax)
They weren’t on display, but the staff kindly brought one out from the back for me (^_^;)

Released to celebrate the naming of Kawashiri Kuramae Street, this special bread carries a wonderful story.
It was created with the wish that great fortune (“daifuku” means “big luck” in Japanese) will come to every customer who visits.

The dough uses rare amazake (sweet fermented rice drink) from Kawashiri’s own Zuiyo Sake Brewery, giving it a soft, one-of-a-kind texture that’s neither bread, nor steamed bun, nor mochi — something entirely its own.

It’s also available as a beautifully boxed gift set, featuring a red-and-white pair: “sweet white (smooth bean paste)” and “light red (chunky bean paste).” 650 yen (excl. tax) / 700 yen (incl. tax)

Many customers pick up the gift box as a thank-you gift for celebrations (●^o^●)
For the gift box, we recommend reserving in advance by phone or via Instagram DM.

Recommended Picks at Kashiho Kazusaya × Pan Kobo kazusaya

I picked up the Daifuku Bread and the An-Cheese (220 yen)! The An-Cheese is one of my all-time favorites at Kazusaya (^O^)/
The bread is wonderfully fluffy, and the sweetness of the red bean paste pairs perfectly with the tangy cream cheese — a match made in heaven!

The Daifuku Bread came stamped with the image of Ebisu, the Japanese god of fortune!Cutting it felt wrong, so I gently broke it in half by hand!

Mine was filled with the lighter red “tsubuan” (chunky red bean paste) ♪
The dough was indeed wonderfully chewy and somehow reminiscent of an amazake manju — utterly unique and delicious.

From breads filled with bean paste crafted by a true wagashi master, to refreshing warabi mochi drinks in summer, Kazusaya offers the very best of both Japanese sweets and bakery worlds.
While you’re here, take a stroll along Kawashiri Kuramae Street, lined with historic landmarks like Zuiyo Sake Brewery, the old boat docks, and the remains of the Kumamoto Domain’s Kawashiri Rice Storehouse. It’s a delicious detour through Kumamoto’s living history ♪
