About Shoyokan
Hello travelers! This is Asukarando, a writer for Sarukuma.
Today I’m taking you to Yunoko in Minamata City, home to
Shoyokan β a charming seaside ryokan (Japanese-style inn).
I recently treated myself to a luxurious stay at Shoyokan in Yunoko, Minamata, and I can’t wait to share the experience with you! (*^^*)
Parking is available right in front of and beside Shoyokan.
There’s also a spacious free public parking area for Yunoko visitors right next door β super convenient.
The entrance has a gentle slope, so it’s easy to navigate with strollers or wheelchairs.
Step inside and you’re greeted by a warm lobby with a small souvenir shop where you can pick up local goodies.

Why Shoyokan Is Worth a Visit
I went with the 5,500 yen day-trip plan.
And here’s the private tatami room where you’ll dine and relax!
The room overlooks the ocean β instant vacation vibes! (*^^*)
Since dinner was a few hours away, it was time for the main eventβ¦
Yes β the onsen (hot spring)!!
Shoyokan offers several types of baths. First stop: the large public bath!
The main bathhouse is in a separate building on the property, called Kiju-no-Yu (“Bath of the Turtle of Longevity”).
And inside Kiju-no-Yuβ¦
A turtle!! (A nod to the bath’s lucky-longevity name.)
The bath is on the second floor, and there’s an automated chair lift for guests with limited mobility β a thoughtful touch.
The spacious changing room even has a baby changing bed, so traveling families can relax. (^-^)
And here’s the bath itself!
The huge picture windows open onto a sweeping ocean view.
Even better, half of the bath is shallow β perfect for soaking with little kids without worry. (^o^)/
The post-bath lounge also faces the sea!
The raised tatami area is roomy enough to stretch out and unwind for a while. (*^^*)
There’s even a picture book corner for kids β adults and children alike will stay happily entertained.
And the bathing options don’t stop there!
The outdoor rotenburo (open-air bath) is stunning!
The weather wasn’t great on the day I visited so the photo doesn’t do it justice β but yes, you can also see the ocean from the open-air bath. (^-^)
There are also private baths you can reserve. This one is a fragrant hinoki cypress bath!
Whether you come as a family or solo, you’ll have the view all to yourself. (^-^)
The other private bath is the one my kids absolutely loved β the cave bath (“Doketsu-buro”)!
The mysterious cave walls glow under soft lighting, and because the spring is fed from the sea, salt crystals have formed on the rocky surface, giving it a craggy, otherworldly texture.
It felt like soaking on a real-life adventure. (^o^)/
Now, on to the next highlight!
The long-awaited dinner!
While we were soaking, the staff quietly set everything up in our room. Hot dishes are brought out gradually, so what you see in the photos is just a snapshot of the full feast.
When you’re this close to the sea, the sashimi (raw fish) is naturally fantastic.
When you say “Minamata,” you say tachiuo (largehead hairtail/cutlassfish).
Tachiuo sashimi is genuinely incredible β a Minamata specialty you have to try! (^o^)/
Salt-grilled tachiuo, plus simmered sea bream collar (tai no aradaki).
The simmered sea bream is gently sweet β a perfect pairing with steamed white rice. (^o^)/
But the salt-grilled tachiuo is the star β the soft white fish almost melts in your mouth. (^o^)/
And there was so much more: chawanmushi (savory egg custard), clear soup, dessert⦠too many dishes to count. Every single one was a winner. (*^^*)
Is that Kumamoto Castle? No, wait β this is Minamata, soβ¦ Minamata Castle?!
This show-stopper is the Kids’ Meal (2,500 yen)!
Lift the castle’s roof and you’ll find a three-tier jubako (Japanese stacking lacquer box) packed with all the dishes kids love. (*^^*)
And the in-room TV (usually off-limits at our family meals!) was approved for the night.
Parents who never get to eat in peace β this is your moment!
With dishes brought in one after another, you can finally savor every bite at your own pace.
There’s so much more to love about Shoyokan than I could fit here, but it’s a fantastic pick for family trips, celebrations, and special gatherings. (*^^*)
A bath-only option (700 yen) is also available, so feel free to drop in for a soak even if you’re not staying. (^^)v
