Today I’m taking you to Sunny Blue, a stylish little café tucked just off Shower Street (Shawā-dōri) in Shimotori, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City.
I got so caught up chatting with friends that I completely forgot to snap a photo of the storefront — oops! But trust me, if you punch the address into your map app, you’ll find it without a hitch.

With its hint of Mexican-inspired decor, Sunny Blue is best known as a spot for fresh-pressed juices, smoothies, and cocktails made with real fruit. But come summer, it transforms into one of Kumamoto’s most beloved kakigōri (Japanese shaved ice) destinations, with a steady stream of customers escaping the heat. Today, we’re diving straight into their famous shaved ice menu.

Now for the moment we’ve all been waiting for — the shaved ice tasting!
First up:
Pistachio Strawberry Milk (¥1,200)
A perfectly dome-shaped mountain of ice generously drenched in pistachio syrup. The pistachio flavor is rich and authentic — pistachio lovers, you’re going to be in heaven!
As you dig into the milky ice, you’ll discover a hidden strawberry zone inside.
It’s less of a syrup and more of a thick, fruit-packed sauce — bursting with real strawberry flavor.
Pistachio, milk, and strawberry come together in absolute harmony. Delicious!
Next up:
Strawberry Milk (¥950)
This one is hands-down the favorite among kids!
As you spoon through the cloud-like fluffy ice, you keep finding more strawberry syrup hidden inside — pure joy in every bite.
Last but not least:
Rare Cheese Yogurt Espuma (¥1,050)
Snow-white shaved ice topped with a snow-white cloud of espuma, accented with bright orange and pink grapefruit segments — almost too pretty to eat!
Wondering what “espuma” is? Turns out it’s Spanish for “foam” — a delicate, airy mousse.
The yogurt’s tangy zing combined with the fluffy, fizzy texture is genuinely unique.
It’s refreshingly light — perfect for hot summer days — and there’s a hidden blueberry sauce inside that takes it to the next level!

On the day of our visit, even a short walk outside left us drenched in sweat — a classic Kumamoto midsummer day. The shaved ice was the ultimate cool-down.
