Today I’m excited to introduce a hidden gem located in Ueki-machi, Kita Ward, Kumamoto City —
a karaage (Japanese fried chicken) & bento shop called 【Poppoya】.

I had been eyeing this karaage bento shop for ages!
I finally got to try Poppoya’s bento, and now I can’t wait to share it with you all (^-^)v

Heading along Route 3 toward Ueki, just turn onto the Old Route 3 and you’ll spot the karaage banner waving on your right.
Parking is available right in front of the Poppoya storefront — super convenient!

There’s even a vending machine on-site, so you can grab a drink along with your bento and head straight to a nearby park for a perfect picnic (>.<)y-~

Here’s a look at Poppoya’s menu:

《Bento Boxes — 550 yen (large rice +50 yen)》
#1 Best Seller — Karaage Bento (fried chicken)
Irresistibly tangy — Chicken Nanban Bento
Manager’s recommendation — Teri-Mayo Bento (teriyaki & mayo)
Japanese or Western style — Hamburger Steak Bento

Miso Soup — 120 yen
Wakame Seaweed Soup — 120 yen

100g (about 2–3 pieces) — 240 yen

Poppoya’s Recommended Menu

I went straight for the #1 best-selling Karaage Bento!

Look at that — four generously sized pieces of karaage packed into one bento (^-^)v

I took it home, so it had cooled by the time I ate it — but even cold, the karaage was so crispy you could literally hear that satisfying crunch. Crunchy on the outside, juicy inside (^O^)

The chicken is marinated in soy sauce before frying. The flavor is gentle enough that even kids love it — so good that I ended up eating the rest with my hands! (>_<)

Add a splash of grated daikon ponzu sauce, and the karaage transforms — refreshingly tangy and even more delicious! ♡ (^-^)v

The rice was unbelievably good too! Turns out it’s fluffy, gas-cooked Kikuchi rice — a famous local Kumamoto variety (^-^)v

The kinpira gobo (braised burdock root) side dish had a bold, savory flavor that paired perfectly with the rice.
Next time, I’m definitely upgrading to the large rice portion! (^O^)
