Welcome to Hanaguri-Ide Park
Hello, fellow travelers!
This is Gussan, a writer for <Sarukuma>.
Today I’m taking you to Hanaguri-Ide Park, located in Kikuyo Town, Kikuchi District, Kumamoto Prefecture.
You might be wondering, “What on earth is a hanaguri?” β don’t worry, you’re not alone!
In short, it’s a remarkable irrigation channel system designed centuries ago by the legendary samurai lord Kato Kiyomasa.
And this park is where you can actually see those historic waterworks up close!
A handy park map greets you at the entrance. There’s a community center with vending machines and clean restrooms β everything is well maintained.
Diaper-changing tables and a nursing room are also available, so families with babies can visit with peace of mind. βͺ
The parking lot is generously sized, but it can fill up on weekends and holidays.
Arriving earlier in the day will give you a much better chance of finding a spot.
Top Highlights of Hanaguri-Ide Park
Before you reach the playground, a sweeping grassy hill rises up before you.
For adults, the slope feels like a mini workout β but the kids burst free and raced to the top in a blink!
The park’s huge play structure offers tons of variety β kids’ eyes light up the moment they spot it.
Here’s the view from the tallest slide. Whoa β that’s higher than it looks!
Equipment that lets kids use their whole body is a parent’s dream β burns off all that pent-up energy!
Another favorite climb-and-explore structure. The ground beneath is sand, so little ones can dig and play too.
There are play structures sized for both bigger kids and toddlers β a real win for families with mixed-age siblings!

These are designed for younger kids, but even our 5-year-old had a blast on them!
There’s a water tap and drinking fountain right by the playground.
Benches are scattered throughout the park, perfect for relaxing on a quiet day β
though on busier days you may find them all taken.
Since the park is bright and sunny, shade is limited, so packing a pop-up tent is a great idea!
