Tatsudayama Forest Park Festival Plaza: Hiking, Nature & Autumn Leaves in Kumamoto

Outing Spots

About the Park

Hello there, fellow travelers!
I’m Ayu-mama, a writer for “Saru-Kuma.”

Today I’m excited to introduce a wonderful nature spot located in Tatsuda Jinnai, Kita Ward, Kumamoto City:
Tatsudayama Ikoi-no-Mori Festival Plaza (立田山憩いの森 お祭り広場).

Nestled at the foot of Mt. Tatsuda, this peaceful plaza welcomes everyone — from serious hikers to school groups on field trips and families looking for a relaxing day out in nature.

Just walk up this gentle slope and you’ll arrive at the plaza.

Here’s the parking area — convenient and free.

Restrooms are located right by the parking lot.

There’s no diaper-changing table, but a child-sized toilet seat is available — handy for traveling families.

A water fountain is also available, perfect for refilling bottles after a hike.

What Makes This Place Special

The plaza used to have athletic playground equipment, but it has since been removed.

But don’t worry — you’ll find a wide, beautifully maintained open space that’s just perfect for a leisurely afternoon!

When we visited, the autumn foliage was at its absolute peak — simply breathtaking!!!

The surrounding area is laced with walking trails — ideal for a relaxing forest-bathing (shinrin-yoku) stroll!
Helpful trail signs make navigation easy, even for first-time visitors.

On a small hill beside the plaza, you’ll find a fascinating piece of history — the ruins of the Hosokawa Family’s tea house, once used by Kumamoto’s ruling samurai clan.

True to its tea house heritage, the spot boasts magnificent Japanese maple (Iroha-momiji) trees and stunning views!

Imagine the samurai of old enjoying tea in such a glorious setting — talk about luxury!

If you’re planning to hike Mt. Tatsuda, be sure to stop by this lovely plaza too!
