Introducing Tama Musubi: Omurice & Vegetarian Cafe
Hello there!
I’m Binako, a SaruKuma writer who’s recently fallen head over heels for homemade bread baking!
Today I’d love to introduce you to a charming spot tucked away in Shitamizu, Ueki-machi, Kita Ward, Kumamoto City — “Tama Musubi – Omurice & Vegetarian Cafe.”

I first spotted this place on Instagram, and it looked exactly like my kind of cafe — so I just had to go. Even with the rain pouring down, I drove over feeling totally giddy!

Here’s the parking area for Tama Musubi.

Inside, you’ll find regular table seating along with cozy sofa seats designed for families with little ones.
They also have child-sized chairs, making this a wonderfully kid-friendly cafe.

They even sell stunning “Akoya pearls” harvested in Amakusa.
The colors are even more beautiful in person — slipping one on is sure to give your day a little lift.
Tama Musubi’s Recommended Menu Highlights

The menu is impressively varied.
Weekday lunches are very reasonably priced.
There are several types of omurice (Japanese omelet rice) with toppings you can mix and match — kids will love it.

You’ll also find weekly rotating lunches and vegan options.
For just +100 yen, you can swap your rice for fermented brown rice (kouso genmai).
At that price, why wouldn’t you?

Here’s the weekly lunch they were serving when I visited.
It’s exactly the kind of wholesome, body-friendly meal I adore.

They also offer a limited-quantity udon made with fermented brown rice kneaded into the noodles.
It’s a brand-new menu item and currently only available in summer, but they’re considering offering a warm version come winter. I really hope they do!

There’s a seasonal meat sauce omurice too.
It comes with soup and salad — definitely enough to fill you up.
And just look at how adorable that omurice shape is!

Don’t skip the sweets, either.
At 500 yen each, they’re perfect for sharing with friends or family.

There’s also a melon parfait on the menu.
With multiple sizes to choose from, it’s easy to enjoy even if you’re dining solo.

And here’s the evening-only menu.
A lovely lineup of small plates that will have your mouth watering just imagining them.

Takeout is available too.
Bring your own dish and you’ll get a 30 yen discount. (Heat-resistant dishes are even better.)
I love that you can bring your own containers and drink bottles.
It cuts down on waste and feels really thoughtful.

After much deliberation, I went with the Fermented Brown Rice Cold Udon (840 yen).
The udon noodles are handmade, so it takes about 10 minutes from order to serving.

Just look at this.
Have you ever seen such a luxurious bowl of udon? Have you ever tasted one?
I was so excited I snapped the photo a little too eagerly.

The aroma of bonito flakes hits you first — it’s wonderful.
With bonito flakes, shiso leaves, and other fragrant garnishes, every single bite feels like a fresh experience.

You can add a little chili pepper for an extra kick.
The noodles are topped with crunchy tenkasu (tempura bits), and the contrast between the chewy, springy noodles
and the crispy tenkasu is absolutely delicious.

Can you spot it? Tiny azuki red beans from the fermented brown rice are kneaded right into the noodles…
Honestly, I just want to share this excitement with someone!
Even without dipping it in the broth, you can taste a wonderful natural sweetness — it’s that good on its own.

To finish, I had the Organic Coffee (400 yen).
Beautifully clean and smooth — I drank it in one go without realizing it.

The staff were so welcoming, and the whole space had such a relaxing, comfortable feel.
I highly recommend stopping by if you’re in the area!
