Introducing Senba Kurayashiki

Today we’re heading to Ishikoji-machi in Uto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, to visit
“Senba Kurayashiki”.

A stylish Western-style restaurant set inside a traditional Japanese storehouse (kura). They also sell takeaway bento boxes.

Right in front of the restaurant flows the picturesque Senba River,
complete with a beautiful stone Senba Bridge. We even spotted koi swimming in the water!

Just a heads-up: some sections of the riverbank don’t have railings, so please keep an eye on little ones 👦👧

Parking is available along the road. 🚙💨 Just follow the arrow along the riverside path to reach the restaurant.

Inside, the converted storehouse boasts soaring ceilings and beautifully exposed wooden beams — a truly atmospheric space.

There’s a mix of table seating and counter seats.

The tables near the entrance offer a relaxing view of the lush greenery outside.

A nice variety of children’s chairs are available.

The area on the right of the photo used to be a kids’ play space, but please note it’s no longer in use!

The restroom even features an adorable Hello Kitty toilet seat for kids!

It’s a wonderfully family-friendly spot, but since it tends to get very busy, please be considerate and avoid lingering too long, even with kids in tow (^^)

Here’s a look at the lunch menu.

Kurayashiki Course: 1,600 yen and 2,100 yen.

Rice and pasta dishes include:

Vegetable Chicken Curry: 1,000 yen
Omurice (Omelet Rice): 1,100 yen
Napolitan Spaghetti: 1,100 yen, and more.

Plenty of meat and fried dishes too:

Hamburg Steak: 1,100 yen
Fried Shrimp: 1,200 yen
Diced Steak: 1,400 yen, and more.
(All come with salad, soup, rice, and a drink.)

Recommended Dishes at Senba Kurayashiki

First up, we tried the popular Kurayashiki Course (1,600 yen).

The luxurious appetizer plate had us instantly excited (^O^)

You can really taste the care put into each dish — every bite was absolutely impressive ✨

Chilled pumpkin potage.

So refreshing — it was the perfect pick-me-up for a summer-weary body (^^)

My daughter, who chose a meat dish, went for the Hamburg Steak.
It was much bigger than expected — what a surprise (ﾟ∀ﾟ)

But what really blew us away was how tender it was.

Fluffy and incredibly juicy! My daughter even asked me to make the same thing at home. Sorry, sweetie — that’s beyond my skills (^^;;

I went for the Pan-Fried Greenland Halibut (Karasugarei Meunière).

And oh my goodness — this was incredibly delicious!

The fish was beautifully soft and flaky, and the sauce was absolutely on point 😍

The course wraps up with dessert and a drink.

Fig tart and cheesecake, paired with a lovely cup of black tea — the perfect ending ✨

And here we have the Kurayashiki Rice (1,000 yen, with salad, soup, and drink included).

You mix in the runny onsen tamago (hot spring egg) and dig in.

The slightly spicy minced meat pairs beautifully with the mild, creamy egg — utterly addictive and highly recommended (^^)

After our wonderfully satisfying lunch, we took one last look at the river before heading home.
