Introducing Blue Sri Lanka

Hello, fellow travelers!
This is Binako, your Sarukuma writer, reporting in after a morning of saying goodbye to my reluctant little one at daycare!

Today I’m taking you to a hidden gem located in Yoshimachi, Minami Ward, Kumamoto City:
“Blue Sri Lanka” — a Sri Lankan curry specialty restaurant that’s been thriving since its pre-opening days.

This Sri Lankan curry shop has been packed with customers since before it officially opened.
By day, it’s a curry restaurant, but by night, it transforms into the izakaya “Yoridokoro Minami” — a fun double identity that’s hard not to love.

For parking, there’s one space directly in front of the restaurant, plus four additional spaces on a gravel lot across the street from “Yoshimachi Domen Park.”
If you’re driving, set “Yoshimachi Domen Park” as your destination — it makes finding parking much easier.

The parking blocks have the shop name written on them, so they’re easy to spot.

Inside, the restaurant is filled with celebratory flowers — a warm welcome that immediately tells you a lot about the kind-hearted owners.

Seating includes both counter seats and traditional Japanese tatami-style “ozashiki” rooms, making it easy to visit even with kids in tow.

Here’s the menu.

You can choose your curry’s spice level from 1 to 3.
For those who can’t handle heat (or for little ones), there’s even a “Zero Spicy” option — a thoughtful touch.

And here’s something that really moved me personally:
“For every bowl of curry sold, 10 yen is donated to a children’s cafeteria (kodomo shokudo).”
As a parent, this kind of community-minded message warms the heart.

I went with the Pork Shoulder Steak Curry (Regular size, 1,000 yen),
and added a Spinach & Mushroom topping for an extra 200 yen.

The rice arrived shaped as a long rectangle — not the usual round mound or rugby-ball shape you typically see in Japan.

This unique presentation had me secretly thrilled before I even took a bite.

Being a spice lover, I went with level 3.
The heat builds with every bite — addictive in the best way.

You taste the spices first, but then come the roasted depth and rich umami that follow, and that’s where the magic happens.
It’s spicy yet mellow, with layers of complex flavor that keep unfolding.

The pork shoulder steak is incredibly tender.
It’s not greasy at all and pairs beautifully with the silky, smooth curry sauce.

Each bite releases a wave of meaty umami that you’ll want to slowly savor.

You can freely choose your toppings, which means you can customize the curry to your own taste — another big plus.

It’s a warm, family-friendly spot that welcomes guests of all ages.
