Today I’m taking you to
Shichijo-machi Okada, Kikuchi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, to visit
“Kaku Tofu Shop”.

Tucked inside the famous “Melon Dome” you’ll find Kaku Tofu Shop, and today I’m excited to share their must-try menu with you! (^-^)v

Parking is wonderfully spacious since it’s part of the Melon Dome property — perfect for road-trippers exploring Kumamoto. (^-^)

Once you step inside the Melon Dome, look toward the back left and you’ll spot Kaku Tofu Shop right away. (^-^)

Behind the traditional noren curtain, you can see the artisans hand-crafting fresh tofu, age (fried tofu), and other delicious products. (*^^*)

Honestly? I’ve been here many times and I’ve still never managed to get my hands on this one!

I’m tempted to call it the ‘Phantom Aburaage’ — it sells out almost the moment it hits the shelf. That’s how popular it is! (>_<)

They also offer ready-to-eat side dishes made with tofu — perfect for a quick snack!

I actually came here today with one specific item in mind…

Kaku Tofu Shop’s signature specialty:

Hirosu — 260 yen

Hirosu (also known as ganmodoki) is a deep-fried tofu fritter packed with vegetables. Still warm from the fryer, it’s absolutely delicious eaten as-is! \(^o^)/

Fresh out of the kitchen, the texture is wonderfully fluffy and tender. (^o^)/

And of course — it’s just as delicious cold! \(^o^)/

These hirosu are surprisingly large — when you pick one up with chopsticks, you can really feel the weight!

Bits of kombu seaweed, carrot, and other vegetables add lovely texture and flavor accents in every bite. (^-^)v

You can also pan-fry them on both sides — the crispy outside transforms into something extra delicious! \(^o^)/
