Introducing Kome no Ate Sumika

Hello travelers! It’s Sashimi here, your friendly writer for [Sarukuma] (ΠΎΒ΄βˆ€`ΠΎ)

Today I’m taking you to a wonderful spot in Ikutomi, Koshi City:
[Kome no Ate Sumika], a cozy Japanese restaurant that opened this December.

It’s just a 5-minute drive from Hikari no Mori Yumetown shopping mall, and also about 5 minutes by car from Amby Kumamoto β€” super convenient if you’re exploring the area! β™ͺ

If you head down the slope from the popular “Nama Cheese Softcream NICORI” (which we featured before), you’ll spot it on your right almost immediately.

Honestly, it’s only about 20 side-steps away β€” practically next door! (γƒ»βˆ€γƒ»)

The parking lot in front of the shop fits 8 cars, and it’s nice and roomy β€” easy to maneuver, even if you’re driving a rental.

Out front sits a traditional Japanese kamado (clay cooking stove) β€” which doubles as the restaurant’s adorable logo. So charming! (^^)

Let’s step inside! β™ͺ

The interior has a chic, sophisticated vibe.

There are comfortable table seats throughout.

Plus around 7 counter seats β€” perfect for solo travelers who want to chat with the chef.

Becoming a regular and chatting at the counter is such a Japanese dining dream! (Though as a shy person myself, I admire it from afar… haha (Β΄βˆ€ο½€))

Now, let’s check out the menu!
First up β€” this beauty:

Morning Set Meal β€” 880 yen (tax included)!
Available from opening time all the way until 12:00 noon β€” great for late risers or as an early lunch.

It comes with miso soup, four traditional obanzai (Kyoto-style home-cooked side dishes), and a drink.

Next, the Chicken Set Meal!

Four different chicken dishes to choose from!
They use locally-raised Kumamoto Herb Chicken β€” a regional specialty. (o^^o)

Next up is the Pork Set Meal.

Whoa! A gorgeous tonkatsu (pork cutlet) made with premium Donguri Pork! β™‘

Next, the Beef Set Meal.

Made with luxurious Kuroge Wagyu (Japanese black beef)! β™‘

Then we have the Fish Set Meal.

The fried horse mackerel (aji fry) set is reportedly a fan favorite! β™‘

Thinking that’s a lot of options? There’s even more!

Ta-daaa! Udon noodles!!!

And get this β€” there’s also…

Soup Curry!!
You’d think this is a traditional Japanese eatery β€” but surprise, soup curry too!
I definitely want to try it next time! Ω©( ᐛ )و

So… what did I order? ( γƒ»βˆ‡γƒ»)

Recommended Dishes at Kome no Ate Sumika

I went with the Miyazaki Chicken Nanban Set and the morning-only Dashi-kake Tamago Set (Egg over Rice with Broth)! (γƒ»βˆ€γƒ»)

First, here are the four obanzai side dishes!
(Both lunch sets and morning sets come with these traditional sides.)

From left: candied kumquats, celery in vinegar dressing, sweetly simmered sweet potato, and daikon radish kinpira.
I absolutely love being able to sample lots of little dishes like this β€” it’s such a fun way to experience Japanese home cooking!

My dining buddy Sashimi #2 received pickled turnip in vinegar instead of celery.
Looks like the side dishes change daily β€” that’s something to look forward to on every visit! ^ ^

Sashimi #2 ordered:

The Miyazaki Chicken Nanban Set (1,518 yen, tax included)! β™ͺ
Chicken nanban (fried chicken with sweet vinegar sauce and tartar) is a Kyushu specialty, and the portion size here is generous!
It also includes chawanmushi (savory steamed egg custard), miso soup, and a drink!

The skin is incredibly crispy, while the chicken inside is unbelievably tender and juicy… so delicious! (*Β΄κ’³`*)
This might be the most tender chicken nanban I’ve ever had!

And I went with this morning gem (orderable until noon):

The morning set Dashi-kake Tamago Set (880 yen, tax included)!
I’d been out drinking the night before, so I needed something gentle…
It also comes with miso soup and a drink.

So much fluffy tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled omelet)!
The gentle dashi broth flavor is pure comfort food… I’m in love (*Β΄κ’³`*)

Bonus tip: this place transforms into an izakaya (Japanese pub) at night!
The evening menu includes…

This is just a small sample!
There are tons of other dishes β€” definitely worth checking out for dinner too. (o^^o)

Here are the accepted payment methods.

The rice is locally-grown Kumamoto rice cooked in a traditional clay pot (donabe) for that perfect texture! (^^)
With carefully selected premium meats and ingredients, you can really taste the dedication that goes into every dish.

Definitely add this to your Kumamoto food itinerary! β™‘

It’s getting chilly these days, so bundle up and treat yourself to delicious food! β™ͺ
See you next time! β•°(*Β΄οΈΆ`*)β•―β™‘
