Welcome to SUN DONUTS
Hello travelers! It’s Aikero, writer for Sarukuma, and today I’m taking you to a charming little donut shop tucked away in Kikuyo Town, Kikuchi District —
SUN DONUTS.
Newly opened on January 7, 2025!
Kumamoto’s donut scene just got even sweeter.
I started writing for Sarukuma back in 2024, and believe it or not, this is already the fourth donut shop I’ve covered!
Hmm… I felt like it was way more than that. Ha!
For those in the know, SUN DONUTS is actually a sister shop to TATOMIYA EZUKO in Ezu, Higashi Ward, Kumamoto City, and BAKE CAFE SUN. in Oe, Chuo Ward.
The name TATOMIYA might ring a bell — it was once a popular sandwich shop in Tsuboi, Chuo Ward. Sadly, the Tsuboi location has closed, but you can still enjoy their delicious sandwiches at TATOMIYA EZUKO, right by scenic Ezu Lake!
“I just want to run things at a relaxed pace,” smiles owner Mr. Miyagawa, who kindly took the time to chat with me.
“This space happened to be available. The exterior is so cute, and it felt like a place I could manage on my own — so here we are,” he explained.
The name SUN carries a beautiful meaning — it stands for Simple, Usual, Natural, reflecting the shop’s philosophy of crafting wholesome, everyday treats made from natural ingredients.
It’s also a heartfelt nod to the owner’s son (“SON,” pronounced the same way) — born from a parent’s wish to create something they’d happily feed their own child. And it ties back to BAKE CAFE SUN. in Oe, where Mr. Miyagawa first started making donuts.
The location is super easy to find!
It’s just about a one-minute drive from YouMe Town Hikari no Mori, in a spot that used to be a bento (boxed lunch) shop.
(As of February 7, Google Maps still shows the previous bento shop at this address.)
There are two parking spaces behind the shop.
Just look for the traffic cone marking the spot!
Drivers of larger vehicles, take note — the entry can be a bit tight.
Here’s something special: most donuts at SUN DONUTS are made without eggs or dairy, making them a wonderful option for kids (and adults!) with allergies.
(Note: a few varieties do contain these ingredients, so check before ordering.)
The dough is slow-fermented for a long time, giving the donuts that signature mochi-mochi (delightfully chewy) texture Japan is famous for. The sweetness is gentle and balanced — perfect as a treat for kids or a light afternoon indulgence.
Holds aren’t available, but for large orders, just send a DM in advance and they’ll happily prepare them for you.
The lineup changes with the seasons, but you’ll generally find around 12 different varieties on display each day.
Here’s what was available the day I visited:
・Honey Lemon — 290 yen
・Cinnamon Sugar (black sesame dough) — 280 yen
・Old Fashioned Strawberry — 290 yen
・Old Fashioned — 290 yen
・Brown Sugar Kinako (black sesame dough) — 290 yen

The drink menu is the perfect companion to your donut of choice!
SUN DONUTS Recommended Picks
A surprise donut treat made my kids absolutely thrilled!
・Simple Sugar
・Old Fashioned
・Strawberry Berry Cream
・Brown Sugar Kinako
I picked up these four to share!
Looks almost like a spot-the-difference puzzle, doesn’t it?
Time to take a peek inside!
Black sesame dough is such a unique twist — and as someone who absolutely adores black sesame, I couldn’t resist!
My daughter swooped in and grabbed the Simple Sugar I’d intended for my son…
The dough is incredibly soft and chewy! Lightly sweetened and beautifully simple — this is what a classic donut should taste like. My daughter was absolutely smitten!
Then my son helped himself to mine…
The subtle aroma of black sesame paired beautifully with the kinako (roasted soybean flour). Watching him munch away, struggling adorably with the chewy texture, was its own little joy.
The Strawberry Berry Cream I’d planned for my daughter ended up with my husband — though my daughter, of course, snatched all the strawberries off the top!
The cream filling is generous and luscious — that sweet-and-tangy berry flavor will have you reaching for a second one in no time.
The Old Fashioned offers a completely different experience — wonderfully crisp and crumbly. It’s lovely how each variety brings its own texture and personality to the table!
I highly recommend grabbing a mix — a cream-filled, a black sesame dough, and an Old Fashioned — for the ultimate tasting experience.
If you love that mochi-mochi chewy goodness, beware — SUN DONUTS might just become your new favorite obsession!
Made with a parent’s love and care, these donuts make wonderful gifts and souvenirs too.
Just a one-minute drive from YouMe Town Hikari no Mori — definitely worth a stop on your Kumamoto adventure!
