Today I’m taking you to a little gem in Ichinomiya-machi Miyaji, Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture:
“Aso Okashi Kobo Tanoya” — a charming sweets workshop nestled along the Aso Ichinomiya Monzen-machi Shopping Street, the historic approach to Aso Shrine.

The shopfront proudly advertises their famous “Tano Cream Puffs” — and as a self-confessed cream puff lover, I couldn’t get inside fast enough!

Inside, you’ll find a delightful spread of baked treats — and a fun surprise: a row of One Piece anime figurines lining the upper shelves. A nice little nod to Kumamoto’s love for the iconic manga series!

The cake counter is a feast for the eyes! You’ll find gateau chocolat (rich chocolate cake), matcha tiramisu, fluffy cheese soufflé, melon shortcake, and a wonderful variety of fresh-fruit cakes.

Best of all, the prices are refreshingly affordable — perfect for a casual treat!

On the side of the shop, freshly baked chiffon cake is sold in two convenient sizes — both small and large — making it easy to grab a take-home treat for any group size.

First up — the famous Tano Cream Puff (130 yen)!

It’s pleasantly compact — the perfect snack-size bite!

Oh wow!!
This is seriously delicious! The vanilla-scented custard inside is sweet but not heavy, and because the size is just right, it disappears in a few happy bites!

One bite and you’ll immediately want another!

Next, I tried the Shine Muscat Daifuku (350 yen)!

This indulgent mochi rice cake is packed with three whole Shine Muscat grapes — a true luxury for grape lovers!

Look at that mochi stretch!

The chewy mochi pairs beautifully with the sweet, slightly tangy Shine Muscat grapes and creamy filling — it’s a heavenly combination.

I ate it with a spoon, but honestly, this is the kind of treat you just want to bite into!

The cream puffs absolutely lived up to the hype — I left the shop completely satisfied!
