2025.02.26

A Sarukuma writer’s firsthand visit to “Sonona Kanoichi (其中之一),” a charming Taiwanese-inspired lunch spot in Kikuyo Town, Kikuchi District, Kumamoto. Price range starts from 300 yen. We’ve also included tips for visiting with kids, access info, and opening hours.
Welcome to Sonona Kanoichi (其中之一)
Hello travelers! I’m Sashimi <゜)))彡, a writer for Sarukuma.
Today I’m excited to introduce a hidden gem located in Kikuyo Town, Kikuchi District:
Sonona Kanoichi (其中之一)
I’d been wanting to visit for ages and was so excited to finally make it (^^)
It’s a wonderfully stylish spot for an unforgettable lunch in Kikuyo Town!
Let me show you around!
To find it: head to the Kikuyo Town Hall area. Across the street from the Kikuyo Town Citizens Sports Ground, you’ll spot an apartment building with a ramen shop on the ground floor. The restaurant occupies a room on the second floor.
From Kikuyo Town Hall, it’s about a three-minute walk — roughly the time it takes to make a cup of instant ramen.
The shop’s flag out front helped me find it, but without it you might walk right past, so keep your eyes peeled (^^)

Parking is available on a spacious gravel lot next to the apartment building.
The available parking spaces are listed at the entrance to the stairs leading up to the shop, so be sure to check before parking.

Climb up these stairs and…

Ta-da! A stylish space opens up before you! The chairs are adorable, and the wall colors are beautiful.
I almost blurted out, “Please let me work here!”
But then again, I’m the type who completely forgot I had a reservation and sat at the wrong table… I doubt they’d hire me (>人<;) lol
And here’s the menu↓
・Lu Rou Fan (Taiwanese braised pork rice) Set — 1,300 yen
・Hamburg Steak Set — 1,400 yen
・Spicy Sichuan Mapo Tofu Set — 1,400 yen
And many more — a menu that whisks you straight to Taiwan.
The flavors are gently adapted to suit Japanese palates, so even first-timers can dive in with confidence!

You can swap your white rice for a mini Lu Rou Fan for an additional 400 yen.

This one looks delicious too…
・Hong You Hei Cu Shui Jiao Mian (chili oil & black vinegar dumpling noodles) — 1,200 yen

・Douhua (Taiwanese soft tofu pudding) — 680 yen
And of course, no Taiwanese meal is complete without a classic dessert ♪
Sonona Kanoichi — Recommended Menu

I went with the Lu Rou Fan Set for 1,300 yen (^^)
It comes with soup and small side dishes too.
On this day, the small dishes included chawanmushi (savory steamed egg custard) and pumpkin with yuzu sauce — four little plates in total.
Every single bite was delicious. The side dishes change daily, so it’s always a fun surprise.

The Lu Rou Fan was packed with juicy braised pork — really filling and satisfying.
Honestly, I’m usually not great with foreign spices, so I was a little nervous, but it was absolutely delicious!
And here’s what my companion, Sashimi #2, ordered↓
Steamed Summer Vegetables and Pork Belly Set — 1,600 yen.
Doesn’t it look amazing?! The colors are gorgeous! It also comes with soup and side dishes.

Loaded with vegetables — a really healthy choice (^^)
It’s limited in quantity, so if you’re set on trying it, get there early!
Hey there, fellow foodies! Both the Lu Rou Fan and the Steamed Vegetable Set are crowd favorites (^^)
And how about this for dessert?!

Douhua (Taiwanese tofu pudding) — 680 yen
It was my first time trying it, and I absolutely loved it! A wholesome dessert that feels good for your body too! ( ´∀`)
That pudding-like, tofu-like centerpiece? I looked it up — it’s actually made from soy milk. So healthy!
Around it you’ll find a variety of beans, mochi-like bites, and something that looks like agar jelly, all drizzled with a sweet syrup. (I forgot to ask exactly what everything was, lol)
Look, look!
The spoon — it’s shaped like a tiny shovel, lol
(Did you notice? The spoon has an unusual shape! (・ω・))
Douhua (tofu pudding). I’d love to make it at home, but my cooking skills aren’t quite there yet… Looks like I’ll just have to come back, lol
Right next to the entrance, there’s also a Taiwanese tea takeout stand!
I grabbed one on the way out — they have all kinds of varieties and it’s seriously delicious!
Thanks so much for reading to the end! See you next time — Zàijiàn! ╰(*´︶`*)╯♡
