πŸ“Œ What you’ll learn in this article
A Sarukuma writer visits Mochikichi Kumanan in Mawatari, Kumamoto, and reports on must-try treats beyond their famous rice crackers. Prices start from 345 yen. We’ve also covered family-friendly tips, access, and opening hours.

About the Shop

Hello everyone, hope you’re having a great day! 😊
This is Yuzu, a writer for Sarukuma πŸ˜„

Today I’m introducing a much-loved spot located in Mawatari, Minami-ku, Kumamoto City:
Mochikichi Kumanan Branch ⭐︎

Mochikichi is one of Japan’s most beloved senbei (rice cracker) shops β€” a name almost everyone in Japan knows! 😁

This time, I visited the branch along Heisei-Odori Avenue 😁

There’s plenty of parking available πŸ‘

You’ll also find spaces right next to the building πŸš—

At the entrance, I spotted a sign for Kusamochi (mugwort rice cake)!
Made with natural yomogi (Japanese mugwort) β€” that’s got to be delicious 😎
With that thought, I headed inside GO! GO!!!

Right by the entrance, there’s a photo of Shodai, the Kumamoto-born sumo wrestler! πŸ†

He visited the Kengun branch after the Kumamoto earthquake 😊

You can also buy the famous Kokugikan Curry here β€” usually only available at Tokyo’s national sumo arena! ⭐︎

Kokugikan Curry is a real cult favorite among sumo fans 😁

These beautifully packaged senbei assortment tins 🍘 are a household favorite β€” perfect as gifts!

The decorative tins make them look really elegant 🀩

Here’s the individually-sold senbei selection.
In the back right, you can spot Tenohira Nikki (“Palm Diary”) β€” have you heard of it?

It’s filled with bite-sized senbei in many different flavors β€” perfect for sampling a variety in one bag! πŸ˜†

Over here, you’ll find Choco Arare (chocolate-covered rice puffs)!

I absolutely love that sweet-and-salty combo! πŸ₯°

Did you know they sell ice cream and cream daifuku too?

The ice cream is just 83 yen! πŸ˜†

Everything is wonderfully wallet-friendly πŸ˜†

You can also buy Chikara-mizu, the natural water Mochikichi uses in their products 😊

This is the traditional Japanese sweets (wagashi) corner.

The Kusamochi from the entrance sign is right here! 😊

Mochikichi’s signature item: Inari Agemochi (mochi in seasoned fried tofu pouches)

It comes in two flavors β€” original and yuzu citrus ⭐︎

I bought some this time, so I’ll go into more detail below 😊

And the main reason I came to Mochikichi today β€”
I wanted to grab the Bisuchoco Batake (Biscuit-Chocolate Field)! πŸ₯°

I’ll share more about it in a moment 😊

Payment is easy β€” they accept PayPay and credit cards πŸ’³

Recommended Items

Here’s what I picked up:

Inari Agemochi β€” 345 yen

The seasoned fried tofu pouch and mochi come separately. Just slip the mochi inside the pouch and microwave for about 30 seconds πŸ‘

Ready in no time at all 😊

Just look at this!

That gorgeous mochi stretch! πŸ˜‹

The fried tofu is packed with savory flavor,
and of course mochi pairs perfectly with it πŸ˜‚

How did I never think of this combo before?!
It’s that good πŸ₯°

Next up:

Bisuchoco Batake (2 pieces) β€” 151 yen
You can see how big they are compared to the tissue box! 😊

This is a winter-only seasonal product, available roughly from late October through February πŸ˜†

In early spring, a strawberry version is also released! 🀩

I first tried Bisuchoco Batake when a friend gave me some, and β€”
it’s seriously SO good!!!

Several friends were with me at the time, and every single one of them went out to buy some the next day πŸ˜†

It has a homey, comforting flavor β€” perfect for kids too πŸ‘

Beyond these two picks, there are tons more tempting items waiting to be discovered πŸ’•

Why not stop by and find your own favorite? It’s a perfect spot for souvenirs from your Kumamoto trip!
