with a not-so-secret late-night marshmallow habit!

Today, I’m thrilled to introduce you to
a wonderful little bakery in Shin-Oe, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City —
“Sarupan”.

The shop is tucked right inside the owner’s home — a beautifully Japanese touch! ^^
When I visited, the place was packed with local housewives picking up their daily bread.
If you spot a line forming on a quiet residential street, you’ve found Sarupan! (*´Д｀)ｗｗ

There’s parking for about 3 cars inside the property — convenient if you’re driving! ^^

The display case was bursting with all kinds of beautiful breads! ^^
From shokupan (Japanese milk bread) and focaccia, to anpan (sweet bean bread) and chiffon cake —
there’s such a wide variety, perfect for breakfast or an afternoon snack ♪

Here’s Sarupan’s No.1 best-seller
Melon Pan — 200 yen

The cookie-style topping is made with kokuto (Japanese brown sugar) and kibi sugar,
making it a healthier take on this classic Japanese sweet bun ^^
It’s also smaller and rounder than your typical melon pan — adorably petite! (*´艸｀)

Next up:
Walnut & Cranberry Campagne — 220 yen

Made with rye and whole wheat flour, this rustic country bread is wonderfully wholesome —
a perfect pick for the health-conscious traveler (*´Д｀)
With generous bites of cranberries and walnuts inside, it’s incredibly satisfying ^^

And here’s:
Nut & Chocolate Biscotti — 100 yen

The perfect snack on the go — generously sized! ^^
Easy to hold in one hand, making it kid-friendly too (^^♪

What I Recommend Trying

This time, I picked up:
Melon Pan — 200 yen
Walnut & Cranberry Campagne — 220 yen
Sausage Roll — 200 yen

Let’s start with the Campagne.
Rye flour is rich in dietary fiber — a true friend for anyone watching their health ♪
And whole wheat flour helps keep blood sugar levels stable, which is always a plus ♪

The inside is absolutely loaded with walnuts and cranberries (*´Д｀)
The bread has just the right firmness, hearty and substantial,
with the natural sweetness of cranberries shining through beautifully.

Look at all those goodies!
The walnut flavor and crunch add the perfect accent —
just one is so satisfying you’ll feel completely full ♪

Next, the Sausage Roll.
A universal kid-favorite that’s sure to please little travelers too! ♪

Wonderfully simple — one whole sausage tucked inside.
The bread is light and fluffy, super easy to eat.
The gentle sweetness of the wheat pairs beautifully with the savory saltiness of the sausage.

Look at that sausage popping out!
Kids will probably nibble both ends of the sausage first before diving into the bread (*´Д｀)

Now, the Melon Pan.
It’s shaped like a muffin — adorably round and charming.
This would make a perfect little gift to bring along when visiting friends ^^

The inside is wonderfully soft and chewy — mochi-mochi, as we say in Japan!
Melon pan can sometimes be a little dry
(though I do enjoy that style too…),
but Sarupan’s version is moist with a lovely bouncy texture.

So chewy!

The cookie crust isn’t overly sweet —
just a gentle, mellow sweetness that disappears in no time.
The size is just right — honestly, you could easily eat two!
